(AP) ? Activists say rebels are attacking several security compounds in the northern Syrian city of Aleppo.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said one of Friday's attacks targeted a compound in the neighborhood of Zahraa, killing and wounding a number of troops. It gave no figures.

Aleppo-based activist Mohammed Saeed said rebels are attacking four security buildings around Syria's largest city, using rocket launchers and machine guns.

Rebels took parts of Aleppo, Syria's commercial capital, last month. Since then, government forces have been trying to recapture them.

Activists estimate more than 20,000 people have been killed since the uprising against President Bashar Assad's regime began more than 17 months ago, turning into a civil war.

There has been fighting all over the country, including the capital, Damascus.

Safe And Natural Methods To Help You Cope ... - Critical Care 2011

Individuals who are in their menopausal years go through a number of discomforts. Once you are in that phase, you will encounter hot flashes, difficulty sleeping, mood changes, and vaginal changes. There are women who have hardly any symptoms, but there are those whose lives are taken for a spin because of the changes associated with this phase. Menopause is not a disease or disorder, so it does not automatically necessitate any kind of medical treatment at all. However, if the physical, mental, and emotional changes are so intense that they already become a disturbance in your life, there are many therapies available which are intended to help you live with these changes.

Hormone therapy is an example of a medical treatment to help you cope with menopausal symptoms is menopause relief. In the past, such therapy was provided as tablets, but this is now offered in several forms, from skin patches, gels, skin sprays, and implants. Hormone therapy is proven to be effective at reducing a number of symptoms such as hot flashes and vaginal dryness; improve sleep better; reduce joint pain; and also avert bone loss and osteoporosis-related fractures.

While effective at reducing hormone replacement therapy however, attitude towards this treatment has changed significantly when the Women?s Health Initiative of the National Institutes of Health said that those who received such treatment had slightly higher likelihood of developing breast cancer, heart attacks, and strokes. Many researches supported those initial the said group too.

Thankfully, several natural menopause cures have been developed over the years, one of them is Menozac. Menozac reviews are encouraging on the whole because instead of synthetic hormones, they make use of phytoestrogens, also referred to as ?dietary estrogens? since they?re not made by the body but obtained by eating plants that are packed with such hormone.

There is increasing evidence that the said hormone is said to have protective action against varied health conditions, and relieving discomforts of menopause. But probably the most important reason why reviews about Menozac have stayed mostly positive since it was first released is that it does not have any unwanted or adverse side effects.

Nevertheless, some lifestyle changes may also function as natural menopause remedies. For instance, a great number of menopausal women state that they experience a reduction in the intensity and severity in a diverse set symptoms through meditation fifteen minutes daily as well as by doing regular exercise. Steering clear of hot and spicy foods, and hot places are also effective in decreasing the occurence and intensity of hot flashes. Some also claim that Flaxseed oil may help diminish hot flashes and joint and muscle pain. Taking in more fruits and veggies, especially thosethat have high concentration of phytoestrogens, such as nuts and oilseeds, will give you the nutrients, antioxidants, and dietary hormones that you need to help you overcome menopause symptoms. ?I apologize in the lateness of the posting of these photos. We ran into some camera difficulties, but THANKFULLY, we were able to salvage all of the pictures that Jes took from Nerdapalooza earlier this month in Orlando. Suffice to say, the event was a metric ton of fun, and a big success! We sadly were not able to get photos of every single set, but, the sets we did get were captured very well. Without further ado, enjoy some photos of some really talented and awesome musicians! All photo credits go to Jes.

CSN: Madden 13 goofs on Bears' road uniform

JAKE FLANNIGAN
csnchicago.png

I know it?s just a video game, but let?s be honest, the Madden franchise is a huge part of pop culture. So when Electronic Arts gives the Chicago Bears orange pants as part of the team's standard road uniform package in Madden 13, it?s sort of a big deal.

The Bears have worn white jerseys and navy pants on the road since 1984. Although some games they have donned the white pants for a storm trooper look. Other games they have sported their home navy tops with white pants when their hosts have decided to wear white jerseys, bucking the traditional home team wears the dark color jersey trend.

Before 1984 the Monsters of the Midway wore white pants on the road, but never orange. In fact I can?t recall that they have ever sported orange pants in the history of the organization dating back to when the club was founded in 1919 at A.E. Staley Manufacturing Company in Decatur. Check out the team threads a year later in 1920 when a young George Halas came aboard as head coach/player. The next season Halas and Ed "Dutch" Sternaman took over the team and moved to Chicago. The rest is history.

How could EA mess this up?

Why do both sports fans and gamers care so much about this epic fail?

The answer is simple. They demand accuracy and are passionate about both sports and video games. It's not like there are 123 teams (or 124...remember when EA just forgot South Alabama existed), or thousands upon thousands of uniform combinations, which is the case in NCAA 13.

There are only 32 teams and the Bears are one of the most historic franchises in the league.

Get it right.

Anderson Silva says he didn?t finish Thales Leites at UFC 97 out of respect

Anderson Silva's last three middleweight title defenses have ended in knockout or technical knockout in the first or second round. He has been on a tear that has cemented him as one of, if not the greatest mixed martial artist in the sport's history.

But before the recent tear and the fifth-round submission win over Chael Sonnen, Silva went through a period that can only be described as weird. In wins over Patrick Cote, Demian Maia and Thales Leites, Silva was not the dominating force we're used to seeing now.

At UFC 97, Leites was clearly outmatched, but Silva couldn't -- or wouldn't -- finish his fellow Brazilian. Three years later, Silva explained why he didn't finish the fight to Brazilian outlet Tatame.

"There's no such thing as holding back. I want to finish as soon as possible. The only time I did it was because he was a friend of mine. It was against Thales Leites. We went until the last round because he's a friend of mine and I respect him", Anderson said.

Since it was three years ago and he's been so dominant since, it's hard to hold this against Silva. However, it puts a new wrinkle in the question of teammates and friends fighting.

Donald Cerrone and Melvin Guillard were teammates, but their scrap at UFC 150 was one of the best 1:16-long fights I have ever watched. Neither held back out of respect, as Silva said he did against Leites.

Their fight gave ammunition to UFC president Dana White, who often gets frustrated by fighters saying they don't want to fight teammates. If teammates Cerrone and Guillard could not just fight, but knock each other silly, why not push teammates to fight?

Silva's comments say why it can still be tricky to force fighters to fight friends and teammates. His bout with Leites caused White to say, "I've never been embarrassed of a UFC fight like I was tonight." While White and the UFC can push fighters to get in the Octagon together, they cannot make them fight the way they want.

Kids and Teens 'Walking' Tall ? FemGuide Women Network

Modern kids and teens are often not active enough. This has led to many kids and teens being overweight and unfit. Sadly, this is a fact. Happily, there are traditional activities making a comeback and they are encouraging kids and teens to get more active. One such traditional activity that is currently trending is stilts.

August 29, 2012 by Karen In Category Baby & Kids

Source: Getty Images

Ask grandparents if they know what pogo stilts are. Not only will they know but they will remember them with great fondness. There was a time when kids and teens weren?t quite so wrapped in cotton wool. It was expected that kids would take a tumble or get scrapes and bruises. The world continued to turn and kids and teens were healthy due to enough exercise.

Like most things pogo stilts have been modernized and fine tuned. The modern variation is called pogo or jumping stilts and they allow you to run and jump like a super hero. Of course, all this super efficiency means your kids and teens must wear the appropriate safety gear.

  • Pogo or jumping stilts are made of aluminum, fiber glass and rubber frames with a platform for each foot. The frames are strapped to each leg once your child or teen places the feet onto the platforms. Beneath the feet are springs. Your stilts let your child or teen jump six to nine feet. It is possible to run close to twenty miles per hour. No wonder kids and teens are keen to get their own pair of stilts.
  • Buy stilts that come with sturdy boots manufactured onto them. This is to ensure the stilts don?t come off. The stilts also have strong straps to retain the feet inside the boots.
  • The safest stilts have a carbon fiber spring. This type of spring gives a lot of bounce and improves the more it is used.
  • Rather than cumbersome straps, choose stilts with ski binders because it allows your child or teen to put on or take off the stilts very easily and quickly.
  • Pogo or jumping stilts are available in different weights so choose what is appropriate according to the weight of your child or teen. You could buy one size up (according to weight) so your child or teen grows into the stilts. Don?t go up any more than one weight as it would be unsafe.
  • Some pogo or jumping stilts come with a helmet, elbow and knee pads. Your child or teen must be fitted with safety gear before attempting to run and jump.
  • If your kids or teen really take to this activity and keep at you could simply replace the spring when they are ready for bigger, higher jumps and faster runs.

The great thing about modern stilts is they get kids and teens out into the fresh air and being active. Even better, they don?t realize they are doing exercise because the stilts are such fun. It also gets them lots of attention from everyone else in the vicinity.

Bj?rn Hurri (update) - Lines and Colors

Bjorn Hurri
Bj?rn Hurri is a concept artist working in the gaming industry, He has worked for companies like NCsoft, Catalyst Game Labs and SEGA and is currently the Lead Artist for Opus Artz, a production design agency based in London.

When I wrote about his work back in 2008, I highlighted his fun and, at the time, lightly sketched illustrations for steam punk versions of characters from Star Wars.

Since then, Hurri has expanded the project into a longer series of more finished illustrations (image above, top), with more elaborate interpretations of the characters.

His other work for gaming projects ranges from historical through science fiction subjects, and frequently displays Hurri?s skill at conveying texture and atmosphere.

I particularly enjoy his playful take on John Bauer?s wonderful big-nosed trolls (above, bottom).

Though his website is currently unavailable, you can find a portfolio of his work, along with some relevant information about the artist, on CGHub.

Hurri is also a contributor to the Gorilla Artfare group blog.

Texas Insurance Commissioner Eleanor Kitzman won one for the ...

Kitzman not for consumers

Re: ?Insurance Games ? Ruling saddles patients with avoidable costs,? Saturday Editorials.

Since our family is not covered by an employer-based group insurance plan, we are always very mindful of verifying that any doctor, hospital, surgery center, lab or x-ray technician accepts our private insurance as in-network before an office visit or procedure. Texas Insurance Commissioner Eleanor Kitzman seems to be on a mission to make that impossible.

She rescinded the order that required health insurance companies to disclose whether doctors who practice at a hospital are in the same health care network as that hospital. Obviously, she favors the insurance companies over protecting consumers from being charged much higher out of network rates.

Perhaps consumer protection is no longer a part of her job description. Gov. Perry appointed her to this position.

Sue Owens, Far North Dallas

Hospitals have no incentive

Re: ?Regulator drops rules aimed at surprise bills,? Aug. 22 news story.

There is no incentive for hospital-based physicians to join insurance provider networks. They get paid more by being paid ?out of network? and billing the unsuspecting patient for the balance.

Have you ever tried telling a hospital that you won?t accept care from a provider outside your insurance network? They go ballistic. I had cervical disk surgery in 2008. The neurosurgeon who did the operation was in my insurance network. He got paid less than the anesthesiologist who was out of network. You usually don?t meet the anesthesiologist until the day of surgery at which time you aren?t generally asking questions about what insurance network they are in.

Obama courts college students returning to campus

(AP) ? As college students return to campus, President Barack Obama's campaign will be there waiting for them.

Obama aides sees college campuses as fertile ground for registering and recruiting some of the more than 15 million young people who have become eligible to vote since the 2008 election. As Republicans hold their party convention in Florida this week, the president will make a personal appeal to college voters in three university towns: Ames, Iowa; Fort Collins, Colo.; and Charlottesville, Va.

Obama's victory four years ago was propelled in part by his overwhelming support among college-aged voters, and polls show him leading Republican rival Mitt Romney with that group in this year's race.

But the president faces an undeniable challenge as he seeks to convince young people that he is the right steward for the economy as they eye a shaky postgraduation job market.

Seeking to overcome that economic uncertainty, Obama's campus staffers and volunteers are touting the president's positions on social issues, like gay rights, that garner significant support among young people. Obama has stressed his effort to freeze the interest rates on new federal student loans, a pitch he personalizes by reminding voters that he and the first lady were once buried under a "mountain" of student loan debt after law school.

They also see a fresh opportunity to court students ? and their parents ? following Romney's pick of Paul Ryan as his running mate. Democrats say Ryan's budget would cut funding for Pell Grants, the federal need-based program for students, and Obama's campaign is running television advertisements in battleground states trying to link Romney to that plan.

Campaigning last week at Capital University in Ohio, Obama told students that Romney's economic plan "makes one thing clear: He does not think investing in your future is worth it. He doesn't think that's a good investment. I do."

Obama was scheduled to speak Tuesday at Iowa State University and Colorado State University. The University of Virginia rejected his campaign's request to hold an event on campus Wednesday, saying it would cause the cancellation or disruption of classes on the second day of the semester. The event was instead being held at an off-campus pavilion in Charlottesville.

White House and campaign officials were closely monitoring Tropical Storm Isaac as it barreled toward the Gulf Coast, but as of late Monday, there were no plans to cancel the president's trip.

Romney's campaign sees an opportunity to cut into the president's support among young people by pushing a three-pronged economic argument focusing on the nation's high unemployment rate, the soaring cost of college and the national debt.

"These kids haven't even entered the workforce and they already owe the government a bill for the debt Obama has rung up," said Joshua Baca, the Romney campaign's national coalitions director.

Obama campaign officials say the start of the new school year is a particularly crucial time to ramp up college registration and make sure those new voters get to the polls. In many of the battleground states, about 50 percent of the college students register to vote on campus after Labor Day, according to the campaign. And even those who are already registered may need to change their address or other personal details after moving to new dorms.

At the University of Dayton, Daniel Rajaiah encourages his fellow Democrats to carry voter registration forms to class, to parties and around campus in case they find someone who hasn't yet registered. Members of the College Democrats set up tables in the middle of campus a few days a week to catch students walking to class or to the cafeteria.

"Our game plan this fall is to hit voter registration very hard," said Rajaiah, who is president of the College Democrats of Ohio.

Obama's campaign said it registered 10,000 voters on college campuses in Ohio last week and signed up 300 new volunteers at colleges in Iowa.

Four years ago, Obama won two-thirds of the vote among 18- to 29-year-olds, compared with just 32 percent for his Republican opponent, Sen. John McCain, according to exit polls.

An Associated Press-GfK poll released last week showed Obama again holding a broad advantage among younger voters, with 54 percent of registered voters under 35 saying they would vote for Obama and 38 percent backing Romney.

Non-Directional Fixed-Income Investing Strategies | Inside Investing

Despite historically low interest rates and the risk of future rate increases, there are ways to make money in the fixed-income market.

Many investors today wonder whether the ?ship has sailed? on investing in bonds. Apart from missing the rally, a number of prominent investors have been vocal about their decision to be short U.S. Treasuries over the last few years. These bond bears are quick to point out that the asset class is in a 30-year bull market and that absolute rate levels leave little room to fall.

Since the 10-year Treasury?s record low yield of 1.38% in late July, Treasury yields have spiked sharply. The 10-year Treasury yield rose almost 50bps (1/100 of a percentage point) in less than a month?s time before recovering back to the mid 1.60%?s as of Friday August 24th.

The objective here is not to point out short-term market fluctuations but, rather, to highlight the typical fears that reluctant bond investors face.? It is not practical to time or predict interest rate movements, but it?s helpful for investors to understand that the success of various fixed income strategies isn?t necessarily predicated on continued falling rates.

A handful of actively managed bond funds have shown significant relative outperformance in the face of a multitude of interest rate outcomes. Certain strategies and combinations of assets can perform well without needing rates to fall further.

PIMCO?s ?Best Ideas? Fund

PIMCO?s Dynamic Income Fund (NYSE: PDI) is a relatively new name (its IPO was in late May). It invests in a multitude of fixed-income asset classes. As of 24 August 2012,? the fund?s net asset value (NAV) had increased 11.08% since its inception (24 May 2012). The bulk of its outperformance appears to have come from the nonagency mortgage-backed security (MBS) portion of the portfolio, where prices have risen between 5% and 10% over the past few months.

PDI?s holdings in financial corporate debt (Cantor Fitzgerald, Morgan Stanley, Lazard, and Soci?t? G?n?rale, among others) have rallied strongly in lockstep with equities. Other exposure in the fund is to high-yield debt and levered loans of such companies as INEOS Finance PLC and First Data Corporation.

Because levered loans typically float to LIBOR, the securities have minimal interest rate risk?just spread and credit risk. PDI is also throwing off a lot of income with a 17.7 cent monthly dividend, which is about 0.65% a month. Remember, although this fund may be less sensitive to interest rates than? more plain-vanilla, U.S. Treasury?heavy bond funds, buyers should understand that is not the same thing as being ?risk free.? A substantial amount of credit and spread risk may exist.? Investors also need to understand that unlike an open ended mutual fund which trades at net asset value (NAV), closed end funds can trade at premium and discounts to NAV.

DoubleLine?s Approach

Jeffrey Gundlach?s DoubleLine Total Return Bond Fund (DBLTX) attracted the most money (about $11.5 billion) among mutual funds through June of this year, according to Morningstar. It?s no wonder it has been so popular; as of 15 August, the fund had a total return of 35.95% since its inception (April 2010). The fund has returned an annual equivalent of 13.89%, while its benchmark?the Barclays Capital Aggregate Bond Index?has returned 6.75% during the same period.

The fund has also performed well this year, with a total return of about 6.97% YTD. Since the 10-year Treasury?s record low yield of 1.38% on 24 July, $DBLTX has gone up in price. I would categorize Gundlach?s Total Return Fund as much less ?directional? than other funds. While other funds loaded up on longer pass-throughs (high LTV, low loan balance), which trade at premiums to normal MBS pools, Gundlach was busy buying out-of-favor pools backed by higher-balance loans, which trade at a discount.

Although this type of strategy may lag peers if interest rates stay low, I believe his portfolio is set up to make money across a wide range of interest rate scenarios. Nonagency MBS and cash holdings provide a buffer if rates move higher because they are considered ?negative duration.? Nonagency bonds are projected to increase in value as the economy improves and rates rise. In my view, the bottom line is that this portfolio is not betting on rates to move in one direction, and Gundlach has demonstrated great skill at combining various assets that outperform as a portfolio.

A New Entrant

A lesser-known fund is the Performance Trust Total Return Bond Fund (PTIAX). This fund has a total return of 10.08% YTD, which puts it in the 97th percentile in its asset class, according to Bloomberg. Since its inception (31 August 2010), PTIAX has returned an annual equivalent of 10.88% versus the 4.75% return of the Barclays Capital Aggregate Bond Index during the same period.

One of the fund?s major benefits is its overall nimbleness. With assets of only about $40 million, the fund can be a lot more selective in its choice of bonds than the DoubleLine or PIMCO funds, which are both substantially larger in asset size. Like PDI and DBLTX, PTIAX has substantial holdings in the nonagency MBS sector.

Because smaller allotments of bonds, or ?odd lots,? usually come with a price break, PTIAX is able, in a sense, to buy cheaper bonds than larger competitors can. In addition to nonagency MBS, the other portion of PTIAX?s ?barbell? is longer-duration, tax-exempt municipal bonds. In the event of a continued rise in interest rates, the municipal portion of PTIAX should provide a relative volatility ?buffer.?

Tax-exempt municipal bonds typically sell off to the tax-equivalent yield; thus, the bonds can be roughly categorized as having? only two-thirds the price volatility of taxable bonds. In plain English, this means that buyers purchase tax-exempt bonds on the basis of the tax-equivalent yield. Therefore, a 100 bp increase in the tax-equivalent yield would increase the tax-free yield by only about 66 bps owing to the tax benefit. Furthermore, municipal bonds still trade at historically wide spreads to U.S. Treasuries, which means that municipal bonds trade at higher yields. If U.S. Treasury yields do rise, spreads could revert to the historical average, which could further mitigate price depreciation. As previously stated, investors would be taking on credit and spread risk by purchasing a fund like PTIAX.

Don?t Write Off Bonds

It is certainly possible to own bond funds and enjoy positive returns without relying on Treasury yields? falling to new lows. As we have discussed, many of the funds that are most protected from a rise in Treasury yields require investors to take on credit and spread risk instead of interest rate risk alone. Actively managed bond funds, such as PDI, DBLTX, and PTIAX, have shown this to be the case, with outperformance in periods of both falling and rising rates. As with any investment, past performance is no indicator of future performance.
