Amy Locane-Bovenizer is taken into custody after her conviction for vehicular homicide.

By Josh Grossberg, E! Online

Sadly, this is not a fictional TV drama for Amy Locane-Bovenizer. It's her life.?The former "Melrose Place" star was found guilty on Tuesday of vehicular homicide and assault by auto resulting from a fatal June 2010 DUI crash in Montgomery Township, NJ.

Per New Jersey's Star Ledger, the 40-year-old Locane was acquitted of the more serious charge of aggravated manslaughter when her 2007 Chevy Tahoe struck a 2010 Mercury Milan as it was turning into a driveway. The collision killed a 60-year-old female passenger, Helene Seeman, and seriously injured her husband, Fred Seeman.

Court papers later showed that the actress admitted to police that she had drank several glasses of wine before getting behind the wheel. Not only that: Before she hit the Seemans, she had already rear-ended a car a few miles from the accident site and sped off before the other driver could call the cops.

Immediately following her conviction, a judge revoked Locane-Bovenizer's bail and remanded her into custody to await sentencing scheduled for March 1.?

Here are some other celebrities making court appearances these days

"This was a case that needed to go to a jury, and certainly we'll respect their decision," Somset County prosecutor Geoffrey Soriano told the paper.?

Bobby Brown pleads not guilty to latest round of DUI charges

The mother of two now faces anywhere from five to 10 years in prison for the vehicular homicide charge and is required to serve a minimum of 85 percent of the sentence without parole. She also faces three to five years on the assault by auto count.

A request for comment was not immediately responded to by Locane-Bovenizer's attorney.

How vegetables make the meal

ScienceDaily (Nov. 27, 2012) ? Chicken, steak, pasta -- these classic dishes are featured in many family dinners. Besides making common sense from a nutritional point of view, would the addition of a vegetable to a meal change anything else for the eater? Would they see the meal as more loving, better tasting or even give them an improved opinion of the meal preparer? In this study researchers Brian Wansink, Misturu Shimizu and Adam Brumberg explored the impact that adding a vegetable to the plate has on perceptions of both the meal and the person who prepared it.

With the majority of vegetable consumption in the American diet taking place at dinner time but only 23% of those meals being served with a vegetable, the study explores what added psychological motivation to include vegetables in meals might exist.

The study consisted of two phases. Twenty-two laddering interviews were conducted, followed by a national survey of 500 American mothers with two or more children under the age of 18. The survey asked participants to evaluate meals served either with or without vegetables as well as a cook who did or did not include a vegetable with a dinner time meal. Participants were also asked to choose from a list of twelve attributes, such as "selfish" or "loving," to describe the meal preparer. No respondent saw both versions of the meal or meal preparer. The survey also asked questions regarding children's favorite vegetable.

Veggies make food TASTE better

Those rating meals that included a vegetable gave significantly higher ratings to dishes such as chicken, steak and pasta on a variety of dimensions including "tasty" and "loving." The results showed that meals were favored when a vegetable was included, such as steak vs. steak with broccoli (score of 7.00 as opposed to 8.08), but also received better descriptions such as "loving" for the same meal (7.00 vs. 7.92). They also chose much more positive descriptors for the meal preparer that served a vegetable, including much more frequent selection of "thoughtful," "attentive" and "capable" accompanied by a decrease in the selections of "neglectful," "selfish" and boring. Overall, vegetables "made the meal," not only in terms of enhancing expectations of the main dish but in terms of creating a better perception of the cook as well.

Some interesting insights concerning children's favorite vegetables were also uncovered. Most participants easily recalled their children's favorite vegetable, with over a dozen different vegetables receiving multiple mentions. Interestingly, vegetable preference changed with age; broccoli was the overall favorite for older children, with carrots and corn topping the list for the younger kids.

In short, vegetables can definitely enhance the enjoyment of the meal, but, unless you're vegan or vegetarian, they will not be the central focus. And if added nutrition is not enough of a motivation to get the veggies on the plate, perhaps the notion that they can turn you into a better, more loving cook might do the trick. With widespread recommendations to increase vegetable consumption among American, and in particular among kids, any tool that can increase servings is welcome. So if you want to be a hero in your own kitchen, just add veggies to your meals and enjoy the nutritional AND emotional benefits they will provide!

NASA Discovers Cracks in Deep-Space Orion Capsule

WASHINGTON ? NASA's first orbital flight-model Orion crew capsule will have to be repaired before its planned 2014 debut after its aft bulkhead cracked during recent pressure testing at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, a NASA spokeswoman said Nov. 19.

The cracks were discovered during a proof pressure test the week of Nov. 5. Proof testing, in which a pressure vessel is subject to stresses greater than those it is expected to encounter during routine use, is one of the many preflight tests NASA is performing on Orion to certify the craft is safe for astronauts, agency spokeswoman Rachel Kraft said.

"The cracks are in three adjacent, radial ribs of this integrally machined, aluminum bulkhead," Kraft wrote in an email. "This hardware will be repaired and will not need to be remanufactured."

It took Orion prime contractor Lockheed Martin Space Systems of Denver about a year to make the vehicle that was damaged. Kraft did not say how long it would take to repair the capsule, built as part of a program intended to take astronauts to destinations beyond low Earth orbit. [Photos: NASA's Orion Spaceship Test Explained]

Cracking occurred when the pressure inside the Orion module reached about 149 kilopascals, or 21.6 pounds per square inch, Kraft said. To pass the proof test, the Orion pressure module has to withstand about 164 kilopascals, which is roughly 1.5 times the maximum stress the capsule is expected to encounter during missions, she said. Increasing the pressure inside the craft in an ambient environment of 1 atmosphere ? air pressure at sea level ? effectively simulates the conditions Orion would encounter in a vacuum.

William Gerstenmaier, associate administrator for NASA's Human Exploration and Operations Mission Directorate, speculated that a beam affixed to the bulkhead's cracked ribs by a pair of bolts "may have been a little stiffer than some of the models portrayed."

To figure out what went wrong, "we'll actually cut out these cracks [from the bulkhead] and then we'll do a scan with an electron microscope," Gerstenmaier told members of the NASA Advisory Council's Human Exploration and Operations Committee. The group, which makes policy recommendations for NASA managers, met here Nov. 15.

A team of Lockheed Martin engineers will perform the post-test investigation. NASA is evaluating what effect, if any, the incident will have on Orion's scheduled late-2014 debut, designed to test essential systems on the vehicle including its heat shield and avionics, Kraft said.

During that flight, which is known as Exploration Flight Test-1, an uncrewed Orion will be launched to orbit and re-enter the atmosphere at about 32,000 kilometers per hour, or roughly 80 percent of the velocity the capsule would reach during a return from lunar orbit. Lockheed is running the flight test for NASA; the agency will pay the company for the flight data.

Lockheed Martin's Orion prime contract, awarded in 2006, is worth $6.23 billion. NASA added $375 million to that award in December so that Lockheed Martin could buy a Delta 4 Heavy rocket for the Exploration Flight Test 1 launch.

Gerstenmaier said in a July hearing that the pacing item for this test flight is the Delta 4, built by United Launch Alliance, Lockheed Martin's 50-50 joint venture with Boeing Defense, Space and Security of St. Louis. The rocket would not be available until September 2014, Gerstenmaier said at the time.

Delta 4 is not Orion's primary carrier rocket. NASA is building the massive Space Launch System rocket at the Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala., to loft Orion on missions beyond low Earth orbit.

The space shuttle-derived Space Launch System is slated to launch the Orion capsule on missions that will take it around the far side of the Moon in 2017 and 2021. Only the second of these flights will be crewed.

While NASA is internally studying other Orion missions, the agency has identified funding only through the 2021 flight.

IU seeks patent for discovery with implications for health care, climate change research

An international team of biologists led by Indiana University's David M. Kehoe has identified both the enzyme and molecular mechanism critical for controlling a chameleon-like process that allows one of the world's most abundant ocean phytoplankton, once known as blue-green algae, to maximize light harvesting for photosynthesis.

Responsible for contributing about 20 percent of the total oxygen production on the planet, the cyanobacteria Synechococcus uses its own unique form of a sophisticated response called chromatic acclimation to fine tune the absorption properties of its photosynthetic antenna complexes to the predominant ambient light color. The researchers identified and characterized an enzyme, MpeZ, that plays a pivotal role in the mechanism that allows two different water-soluble proteins in Synechococcus -- phycoerythrin I and II -- to alter their pigmentation in order to maximize photon capture for photosynthesis.

Scientists want to understand how cyanobacteria optimize their photosynthetic activities in different light conditions to gain a better appreciation of how human activities affect the phytoplankton's ability to produce oxygen and uptake the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide, which they consume in order to grow. Science and industry also use the pigment-protein complex phycoerythrin for fluorescent imaging and as fluorescent markers in biotechnology and health care applications.

"We now have the ability to attach a novel chromophore, part of a molecule responsible for its color, to phycoerythrin, which provides a new chromophore-protein combination that absorbs and fluoresces at a wavelength that is not currently commercially available," said Kehoe, a professor in the IU Bloomington College of Arts and Sciences' Department of Biology. "Our results suggest that this new chromoprotein is brighter and more stable than most on the market today."

Kehoe also noted IU has begun the process of filing a patent on the invention.

The team found that the gene encoding the MpeZ enzyme is activated in blue light. Once produced, MpeZ then binds to antenna proteins containing pigments that normally catch green light and attaches an alternative chromophore that allows the antennae to capture blue light. The specific mechanism, called type IV chromatic acclimation, involves replacing three molecules of the green light-absorbing chromophore with an equal number of blue light-absorbing chromophore. This color-shifting is reversible and is controlled by the ratio of blue to green light in the environment.

"These 'chromatic adapters' are true chameleons that can efficiently live in green coastal waters as well as in blue offshore waters by modifying their pigmentation," Kehoe said. "Synechococcus cells maintained in blue light harvest preferentially blue light, while cells grown in green light harvest more green."

"A phycoerythrin-specific bilin lyase-isomerase controls blue-green chromatic acclimation in marine Synechococcus" was published online in the Early Edition of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Co-authors with Kehoe, also affiliated with IU Bloomington's Indiana Molecular Biology Institute, were IU Ph.D. student Animesh Shukla; Avijit Biswas and Wendy M. Schluchter of the University of New Orleans; Nicolas Blot of Universit Pierre et Marie Curie - Paris 06, the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique and Clermont Universit in France; Frederic Partensky and Laurence Garczarek of Universit Pierre et Marie Curie - Paris 06 and the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique; IU Bloomington Department of Chemistry METACyt Biochemical Analysis Center mass spectrometry facility manager and assistant scientist Jonathan A. jaime's Site - What do You Imply by Internet Hosting

With Online selling and online search engine optimization (Search engine marketing) now very important elements to owning a business site, most internet designers are including Web optimization to their arsenal of functions.

The issue is the fact the majority of these self-proclaimed SEO/web designers are unsuccessful to fully realize the complete picture of natural and organic Website positioning. The tips to properly optimize a website are dramatically evolving. And although anybody can do keyword examine and compose meta tags and website page duplicate, a large number of web-site designers pass up the mark with Search engine optimization using a site's back-end.

Whether or not you happen to be thinking about choosing a solo designer or full-service online layout small business, it is actually important that the supplier has learned what they is working on if Search engine optimization is concerned. In reality, respecting the SEO-friendly parts of the webpage is often a should always in the course of the online model process.

Within this piece, we protect a handful of unique parts that website designers (or providers selecting an internet designer) ought to be conscious of when making a well-optimized websites.

Research Helpful CMS

A good number of online business companies design their internet websites approximately a CMS platform or articles and other content administration product like WordPress or Drupal. CMS software application constantly features 'plug-ins' for Search engine optimisation which allow customers to write down custom URLs, web page titles, and meta descriptions. However these Search engine optimization parts are important to own key phrase optimized for each site, a research welcoming CMS goes perfectly beyond what a Website positioning plug-in can provide.

The real difference maker in having a SEO-friendly CMS facilities over the coding structure from the internet site. Some world-wide-web designers, though resourceful, will use completely graphic intense ideas which can diminish a site's Search engine optimization future. Most people are effectual at balancing aesthetics with small, search-friendly coding.

Down below are a few things to consider despite the fact that utilizing a CMS in your optimized web-site:

Locate articles and other content administration devices that use CSS style sheets (in contrast to nestled tables). This enable search engine spiders to crawl and catalog your site's subject matter a lot more competently.

Consider a CMS that allows you to place interior one way links and navigation over the web-site in targeted regions, these given that the footer or column. Some platforms and online create templates will probably restrict exactly where one can destination one-way links, which is huge consideration for Search engine marketing.

Stray absent from CMS platforms that instantly established static URLs for each site. Definitely opt a CMS that permits end users to jot down vibrant, key phrase optimized URLs for each site (and that's regularly periods feasible by way of a plug-in).

Find out if the content material management method allows for computerized XML sitemap generation. If it is not going to, consult you world-wide-web designer if they will be making and submitting the XML sitemap manually.

These points it's possible you'll aspire to bear in mind as likely requests for your potential word wide web design group, primarily those that intend on using a website content administration technique to function your internet site.

Back-End Code Structure

The procedure of designing a well-optimized resource site are advised to concentrate on the back-end composition from the website's code, or HTML. This includes webpage aspects that can be visible over the site (these kinds of to be the content or web page duplicate) at the same time as things that off the page (these kinds of as meta facts). The way in which during which the code is structured, also towards different types of code being used, can eventually effect Search engine marketing effectiveness.

The 2 primary off-page components that keep the greatest weight for Search engine marketing is definitely the site title and meta description. The webpage title and meta description should probably be scripted as early as feasible in HTML of every web page. The title particularly (which defines a website page and normally include things like a key phrase reference for Search engine optimisation) is most significant. An internet site designer or developer will want to ensure the internet search engine spiders strike the webpage title as one in all the initial bits of code wherein it crawls.

Likewise, the on-page subject matter of a website would be wise to also be introduced as earlier as possible inside code. The human body copy is the pages' bread and butter for Search engine optimization, and when this articles and other content is at the bottom in the page's back-end, the spider crawls it very last (which happens to be not the top for Search engine optimization). Expert word wide web designers and developers can use 'div' tags to indicate the articles and other content earlier inside HTML, even if lots of navigation back links could quite possibly be earlier mentioned the content material as it is actually demonstrated concerning the website page.

These coding variables might probably also rely upon the content material administration process that's getting used. This is why, it is important to possess a suitable recognizing of just how SEO-friendly your CMS is, also as your web site designer's coding functions.

Go for an internet Style Corporation Correctly

If you are in search of a web style and design business enterprise for both the look and Web optimization of your respective site, do not ever be bashful. Which is, don't wait to check with your potential customers plenty of requests. Some sectors you might like to deal with will be the provider's technical knowledge, this kind of as her or his HTML coding capabilities, also as their graphic structure ability. Talk to to view if they have any references and examples of well-ranking websites that they have fashioned and optimized inside earlier.

In summary, there's multiple websites companies that promote Seo, yet failed execute search engine optimization proficiently. Just make certain that you come organized when searching for these dueling solutions in one package deal.

tarnish barrera: The Importance of Editing Film and TV Production ...

To the uninitiated, editing may look like a monotonous task that is both mentally as well as physically taxing.

In fact, the film editor has the job identical to a cook.

The importance of editing dates back ages, chronicled in the book "The Technique Of Film And Video Editing" by Ken Dancyger. It upholds some of the finest examples of editing imparting the narrative of the film through silent shots, music and jump shots involving ordinary objects. Alfred Hitchcock's filmmaking (in films like 'Vertigo' and 'The Man Who Knew Too Much') is considered to have some of the finest editing work by the erstwhile standards, and can easily exemplify why editing is considered so integral to the success of a film or TV production.

In the earlier ages, editing was physically done, with the help of mechanical equipment that sliced, spliced and appropriately put together 'linearly' edited reels. The digital revolution and technological advances like the Firewire have magically simplified the post-production process. With software applications like Adobe Premiere, Final Cut Pro and Windows Movie Maker, editing is not restricted to professionally trained editors and apprentices. The ease of use and interactive applications has made it possible for film students, amateurs and one-time users to edit their own film or video productions.

The advent of computers has also allowed editors to enhance the creativity of their work. Unlike the mechanical equipment which was used on the original reel and did not warrant a liberal creative license or room for error to the editor, digital editing offers a huge scope for improvisation. The latter has opened up avenues for experimentation, much better treatment and quick editing procedures. Off late, films have been centered on editing and the whole post-production process, rather than the filming of the same. Recent examples can include 'The Lord of the Rings Trilogy' and 'Avatar', the latter incidentally being the highest revenue-grossing films of all time!

With technology advancing in the speed of light-years, editing in film and TV production has gained a pivotal role. And every filmmaking unit, irrespective of size, style, location or budget, has already acknowledged the same!

Truce hits Netanyahu support but still set for poll win

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Discontent over the ceasefire Benjamin Netanyahu struck with Hamas in Gaza has cost the Israeli prime minister support but he should still win a January 22 election, an opinion poll showed on Friday.

Maariv newspaper conducted the survey after an eight-day Israeli offensive against Palestinian militants in the Gaza Strip ended on Wednesday with an Egyptian-mediated truce that Netanyahu's critics said was premature.

The survey said the newly-merged party of Netanyahu and Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman, Likud Beitenu, would take 37 of the 120 parliamentary seats up for grabs on January 22. A poll before the conflict suggested they would win 43.

The two factions presently hold 42 seats combined.

Israel launched its offensive last week with the declared aim of ending rocket attacks on its territory from Gaza, which is ruled by the Islamist militant group Hamas. Some 163 Palestinians, including 37 children, and six Israelis were killed in the violence.

After the announcement of the truce, Netanyahu's political opponents were immediately critical, saying the peace would never last and that Hamas had been let off the hook.

"Right-wing and ultra-religious voters favored continuing the military operation," Professor Yitzhak Katz, who conducted the Maariv poll, told Army Radio.

The survey said 31 percent of Israelis approved of the ceasefire while 49 percent were opposed. Asked if the army should have re-occupied Gaza, 41 percent were against and 29 percent in favor.

Israel captured the Gaza Strip from Egypt in the 1967 Middle East war and withdrew in 2005, leaving the territory in the hands of the Western-backed Palestinian Authority. Hamas seized control in 2007.

FORMER LEADERS WAITING IN THE WINGS

Despite the predicted drop in support, Netanyahu remains on track to win a third term as prime minister at the head of a coalition of right-wing and religious parties that together look set to take 67 seats, the poll said.

While the prime minister has seen a dip in support, his defense minister, Ehud Barak, appears to have got a boost from the conflict, with his tiny Atzmaut faction on course to win four seats. Previous polls predicted it would win none.

The poll showed Israel's splintered centre-left bloc taking 50 seats, with a reinvigorated Labour almost tripling its quota of parliamentarians from eight to 22.

Centrist party Kadima, Israel's largest faction, is teetering on the brink of elimination from the next parliament. The poll showed it falling from 28 to 2 seats. Other surveys have shown it disappearing altogether.

Israel's former Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni, pushed out as Kadima's leader in March, is widely expected to announce next week that she will run at the head of a new centrist party that the poll predicted would win eight seats.

Livni is likely to challenge Netanyahu on diplomacy, charging that he has left Israel isolated on the world stage.

Olmert has been reportedly considering a political comeback, but commentators said he was expected to announce next week he will not run in the January election.

Samsung Stratosphere 2 quietly goes on sale - here's your first look!

Samsung Stratosphere 2.

When Verizon and Samsung announced the Stratosphere II (full annoying name is Samsung Galaxy Stratosphere 2) a couple weeks ago, the only clue we got as to availability was the ever-ambiguous "coming soon." Turns out, it's available now. In addition to being listed on Verizon's website ($129 on contract, $449 outright), Android Central reader Steve picked one up at his local Radio Shack for his wife, who "loves it," he writes. "She has to have a keyboard phone so she's thrilled to finally have a new phone."

Steve brings us a pretty good look at the QWERTY smartphone, with its five-row silder keyboard hidden behind the display when not in use.

Note that it's running Android 4.0.4 out of the box, is sporting a 4-inch Super AMOLED display powered by a 1.2 GHz dual-core processor and has NFC and is ISIS-ready, plus a microSD card.

We've got more pics of the Stratosphere 2 after the break.

Thanks, Steve!

Travel And Leisure: Western Caribbean Cruise - How Hubs

We were on the Radiance of the Seas for the western Caribbean cruise on November 28/04This was our second cruise with Royal Caribbean with our first last year on the larger Adventure of the SeasAfter one cruise with RCI, I expected roughly the same standards with the Radiance and in general, I wasn?t disappointed.
Staterooms:
Our stateroom was an inside aft cabin and we were not disappointed. It was roomy enough and the lighting was adequate. Closet space and drawers were also sufficient for our use. We noticed that the double beds here were actually a bit better than the one we had on the Adventure since we couldn?t really feel the split between the two separate beds like we did last time. If there?s one thing that can be improved is the shower curtain. The one installed was not adequate in keeping in all the water from the shower. The shower on the Adventure utilized a double glass door system which was far superior. Otherwise, the cabin was nice and dark for sleeping at night. Although we heard a little noise from the cabins next to us, it was minimal. We didn?t miss having any window or balcony at all since we were hardly ever in our stateroom. We were either at port or elsewhere on the ship and went back to our cabins just to relax or sleep. We would definitely book an inside cabin again with RCI unless we had a free upgrade.
Dining:
The main Cascades dining room was nice and meals were good. Breakfasts had the same menu every morning. Lunch at the dining room was okay. The dinners were good but not every meal item was a winner. There was the odd appetizer and dessert that was not up to par. One thing that my partner noticed was that the portions of the main courses seemed to be smaller than those served on the Adventure. We usually went upstairs to the Windjammer to get more food after dining at the Cascades. In some parts of the Cascades room, the tables were placed too cramp so walking to out own table was tricky at times. The self serve Windjammer was good. It usually had more variety of food than served downstairs at the Cascades. Breakfast and lunch were busy at the Windjammer but during evenings, most people chose to dine at the Cascades. The two other optional restaurants onboard Portafino and Choppe House were available at $20 US per person but we never tried them since the meals already included at the Cascades and Windjammer were fine by us. Other passengers who did go to these optional rooms told us that they were nothing special. There was another cafe available during late evenings called the Seaview and they provided fare such as sandwiches, salads and burgers. This was a nice feature. One thing we did object to was that they charged for the coffee and tea there. There was also a specialty coffee place on the main centrum of the ship and they also charged. We had more availability of free beverages on the Adventure.
Service:
The service by the stateroom attendants and dining room staff was top notch as expected.
Entertainment:
The evening shows at the Aurora Theatre were a mix of the ship?s own crew of dancers and singers plus some outside comics and singers. In general, the shows were quite good. We would have liked them to mix up the entertainment each night rather than allocate music, comedy and magic into different evenings. Rather than an entire show of magic, we would have preferred each night featuring a variety of entertainment. Live music around the ship was a nice added touch.
Amenities:
Although smaller than the Adventure, the Radiance had fine amenities including the gym/spa, mini golf, pools and the shops. There was internet access but at 50 cents per minute, the service is a bit steep. There were things to do during the days at sea such as art auctions, cooking demos and dance classes. However, we felt that there was more offered on the Adventure. As for embarking and disembarking, there was no problem on the Radiance. The 6th level contained the casino and for non-smokers, this was a problem. The ventilation in the casino was not great and as a result, cigarette smoke travelled to adjacent areas near the casino. My partner wanted to avoid going on the 6th level whenever possible.
In summary, we enjoyed our cruise on the Radiance of the Seas. However, comparing it to the larger Adventure of the Seas, we would rate the larger ship a bit higher. We liked the huge promenade on the Adventure which was not available on a smaller ship like the Radiance. Given a choice in the future, we would opt for the larger ship. For first time cruisers, the Radiance would still be a good ship to vacation on. This is simply the case of where veteran cruisers would expect more especially if they have been on higher end ships.

(AP) ? Syrian rebels seized a key military base with artillery stockpiles in the country's east Thursday, strengthening their hold in an oil-rich strategic province bordering Iraq, activists said.

The rebels have been making advances in the Deir el-Zour province recently, and the capture of the base followed the seizure of a military airport in the same area last week.

In the country's north, meanwhile, the two sides have been locked in a deadly stalemate for months.

Syrian warplanes flattened a building next to a hospital in Aleppo late Wednesday, killing at least 15 people, including a doctor and three children, and damaging one of the last remaining sources of medical help for civilians in the northern city, activists said

Once a private clinic owned by a businessman loyal to President Bashar Assad, the Dar al-Shifa became a field hospital run by volunteer doctors, nurses and aides united by their opposition to the regime and the need to give medical care to both civilians and rebels.

The facility has taken at least six direct hits in recent months, mostly affecting the upper floors. The seven-story hospital is only 400-500 meters (yards) from the front line in a neighborhood that is heavily shelled every day.

The warplanes turned the building adjacent to the hospital into a pile of rubble and sprayed shrapnel and debris into Dar al-Shifa itself, activists said.

Rami Abdul-Rahman, chief of the Observatory, said at least 11 fighters were killed in the raid, in addition to a doctor, a young girl and two children who were on the street.

Another activist group, the Local Coordination Committees, confirmed the bombing and identified the doctor as Mohammad Qassem Agha. The group said 40 people died in airstrikes in Aleppo on Wednesday, but did not say how many died in the hospital strike.

Videos posted online by activists showed the flattened building and significant destruction in front of the hospital. Residents and rebels, along with a doctor in green scrubs are seen picking through the rubble and overturned gurneys outside the hospital entrance.

In one video, a man calls for survivors under the rubble while another is heard crying for help underneath a huge slab of concrete.

Syria's conflict erupted in March 2011 with an uprising against Assad's regime, inspired by other Arab Spring revolts. The crisis has since morphed into a civil war, with scores of rebel groups across the country fighting government troops. More than 40,000 people have been killed in the 20 months of unrest, according to activists.

Activist groups and a local fighter told The Associated Press the Mayadeen base fell in the morning hours, after a three-week siege. The fighter spoke on condition of anonymity because of security concerns.

The base was considered the last stronghold for regime forces in the eastern province, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

In Damascus, two mortar shells struck the upscale neighborhood of Mazzeh during the morning rush hour Thursday, injuring at least one person, Syrian state TV said.

The report blamed "terrorists" for the attack, a term the government uses for opposition fighters.

The neighborhood is home to a number of foreign embassies and has been targeted several times in the past few days. On Tuesday, two mortars struck the Information Ministry building, causing material damage.

An AP reporter at the scene of the Damascus blasts said one of the shells burned a six-floor apartment in a residential building, seriously injuring one woman. The second mortar struck and damaged the first floor in a building across the street.

Nizar Hamdi, a 38-year-old owner of a computer center, said the timing of the blast coincided with the time students head to school.

"This is a residential area and there are no military bases here. So why are they targeting civilians?" he said.

Syrian TV showed a girl wearing the school uniform who said the mortar fell as she was preparing herself to go to school.

"It was terrifying, I couldn't go to school. People were screaming," she said.

The Syrian capital ? the seat of Assad's power ? has seen scores of attacks in the past months and a growing number of car bombs and mortar attacks by rebels determining to oust him.

The civil war has often spilled over to Turkey, Lebanon and Jordan. Tens of thousands of Syrian refugees have fled to the three neighboring countries to escape the violence in their homeland, raising fears of a wider war in the volatile region.

Tensions have been particularly high along Syria's border with Turkey, prompting the Turkish government to request the deployment of NATO's Patriot surface-to-air missiles to bolster its defenses.

Fighting broke out Thursday in the city of Ras al-Ayn on the Syrian side of the border, but it was between Kurdish and Arab rebel factions, according to an official at the mayor's office in the nearby Turkish town of Ceylanpinar. The official spoke on condition of anonymity in line with government rules.

The groups cooperated to oust Syrian regime forces from the ethnically mixed area earlier this month, but they have frequently clashed since then over control of the city.

The Britain-based Observatory, which relies on reports from the ground, has confirmed the infighting in northeastern Syria, an ethnically mix area along the border with Turkey.
