Casio XJ-H2650

The Casio XJ-H2650 isn't Casio's brightest projector, but it's part of Casio's Pro Series, which is its brightest line of projectors. It also offers WXGA (1280 by 800) native resolution, the highest in the Pro Series line. That's a moderately big deal, because until now, if you wanted a WXGA Casio projector you had to settle for one of the lower brightness models. The XJ-H2650 delivers the highest brightness Casio offers with WXGA resolution, and the highest resolution with Pro Series brightness, all of which makes it a good choice for mid-size conference rooms and classrooms.

Casio rates the XJ-H2650 at 3500 lumens, a bit less bright than the 4,000 lumen Casio XJ-H1750 Pro Series that I reviewed earlier this year. However, the XJ-H1750 offers a native XGA (1,024 by 768) resolution.

The only other Pro Series model with WXGA resolution is the XJ-H2650's near twin, the Casio XJ-H2600 ($2,000 street). Casio says that the two models are identical except for the addition of USB A, USB B, and LAN ports to the XJ-H2650, along with features that depend on those ports. Most notably, the XJ-H2650's USB A port lets you plug in a supplied Wi-Fi adaptor so you can connect directly with, and send data images from, Windows and Mac computers as well as most Android, iOS, and Windows smartphones and tablets.

The extra ports also let you plug in a memory key to read JPG and a few other file formats directly, control the projector over a network, send data images over a network, and add interactivity with an interactive pen and software option ($260 street). However, the interactive feature is hard to recommend, since the projector's standard-throw lens would make it hard to interact with the image without casting shadows that would get in the way. All other features on the XJ-H2600 and XJ-H2650 should be identical, so the rest of the comments in this review should apply to both.

Basics, Setup, and Connections
Like all current Casio projectors, the XJ-H2650 is built around Casio's hybrid light source, consisting of LEDs and a laser paired with a DLP chip. The LEDs produce the red and blue primaries directly. The laser shines on a phosphor element to produce green.

Not too surprisingly, given that both projectors are part of the same Pro Series, the XJ-H2650 shares a lot of its basic features with the XJ-H1750. In particular, it weighs almost the same, at 15.6 pounds, which makes it most appropriate for permanent installation or room to room portability on a cart.

Setup is standard, with a manual focus and a manual 1.2x zoom, which gives you some welcome flexibility in how far you can put the projector from the screen for a given size image. In addition to the LAN and USB ports I've already mentioned, connection choices include the usual HDMI for a computer or video source, VGA for computer or component video, and both S-video and composite video inputs.

Brightness and Eco Modes
In my tests, the XJ-H2650 was easily bright enough in its brightest mode for a 78-inch wide (92-inch diagonal) image to stand up to the typical level of ambient light in an office or classroom setting. Even better, it was bright enough at that size so you could easily take advantage of its eco modes to minimize power use and save on electricity.

Most projectors offer one bright mode and one eco mode that lets you lower brightness and power consumption. Beyond that, they offer color presets that can also affect brightness, but are, in theory, meant to adjust color.

The XJ-H2650 gives you more flexibility for brightness and power use, with two non-eco modes, which I measured at 340 watts and 290 watts, plus five eco modes, with a measured range of 260 to 115 watts. With multiple eco modes, you have the freedom to pick the best color setting first, and then choose the least bright mode with the brightness you need, instead of using the color presets to adjust brightness. Also worth mention is that the only projector I've seen with more eco-mode levels is the laser-based BenQ LX60ST that I recently reviewed.

Making memories while we WAIT! ? Surviving Motherhood

by Kimberly on September 28, 2012

It?s HARD to be patient. In a world where everything is instant gratification and scheduled c-sections and inductions waiting for this baby is not easy. It felt like we had our lives on hold last week leading up to our due date and then once it passed we thought we would go crazy ?waiting? with every twinge and contraction for her to make her debut so we had to get back to somewhat of a normal routine. As of today, baby girl is 4 days late but I know she will come in her own perfect timing! Luke has been the sweetest little guy and I?ve been more focused on spending the last few days just the two of us and enjoying the one on one time with him. I know our world will be turned up side down once this baby arrives and it will take time to get into a new family routine once she?s here!

I?ve been taking Luke on little daily surprises each day this week while we pass time waiting for his lil sister. We?ve had a lot of fun and I can tell he?s really needed the extra attention lately when everything has already started revolving around the new baby. I haven?t felt up to do our usual classes or been able to get down on the floor with him and play like we used to so he?s loved these surprises!

On Wednesday we jumped in the car and headed over to Run, Jump and Play after lunch and then went for ice cream after ? it was a sweet treat and so nice to let him play and run around on a rainy day with out any time constraints. Yesterday Julian had the great idea of taking him to see Finding Nemo in 3D at the cinema and he was SO excited?perfect for another dreary rainy day! We usually have errands or classes or other scheduled things to do so it?s been fun to do some things out of the ordinary and just have FUN.

Luke with his 3D glasses at the cinema!

This morning I woke up early and headed down stairs to have pancakes made for Luke when he woke up at 7:30. The look on his face was priceless ?who are you and what have you done with my Mommy?!? Anyone who knows me knows that I am NOT a morning person. When Julian and Luke came down this morning to me singing with pancakes they thought I had officially lost my mind! Usually, Julian comes downstairs with Luke and then I end up coming down around 8am and being a vegetable until about 9am, after I?ve had coffee and time to wake up. I still don?t know how people can be so happy in the morning ? I couldn?t do it every morning but it was great fun to surprise the boys and see them so surprised to see me dancing and singing in the kitchen this morning?totally worth it! All morning Luke has said ?thank you for breakfast Mommy? and telling me how much he loves his mama so I know it meant a lot to him?mission accomplished!

What have you done to surprise your kids and do something out of the ordinary with your family? Doesn?t it feel great to throw the ?rule book? out the window sometimes and just do something FUN with the kids? Those days are the memory makers, aren?t they?!

Buddhist statue acquired by Nazis is space rock

One religious statue has a stronger connection than most to the heavens. An 11th-century carving from Mongolia of the Buddhist god Vai?ravana was fashioned from a meteorite fragment, a chemical analysis shows. Its extraterrestrial origins make it unique in both religious art and meteorite science.

The iron-rich statue, 24 centimetres tall, has had a colourful past. It was apparently brought to Germany in 1939 by a Nazi-backed archaeological expedition to search for the roots of Aryanism.

A swastika on the armoured Buddha's breastplate may have been a motivating factor in bringing the statue to Germany. The swastika is a common symbol in eastern culture and decorates many Hindu and Buddhist statues ? although the version on the statue is a mirror image of the form favoured by the Nazis.

It's unclear whether the Nazis found anything of unusual significance in the statue, but Elmar Buchner at the University of Stuttgart, Germany, and his colleagues certainly have.

"When I first saw the statue I was sure that it is made of an iron meteorite," Buchner says.

Their chemical analysis of the statue confirmed the hunch. It showed that the concentrations of metals, including iron, nickel, cobalt and chromium, matched the values known from iron meteorites.

Space Buddha

More precisely, Buchner's team has managed to tie the statue to a known meteorite ? the Chinga ataxite, which fell to Earth between 10,000 and 20,000 years ago near the border between Siberia and Mongolia. It fragmented as it fell, and just two pieces heavier than 10 kilograms were known before the new analysis. The "Space Buddha", as Buchner's team has dubbed the statue, is the third such piece, at 10.6 kilograms.

"Having looked at some of the published trace element data for this artefact, it looks pretty convincing to me that this is very likely originated from Chinga iron meteorite," says Meenakshi Wadhwa, director of the Center for Meteorite Studies at Arizona State University in Tempe.

Other venerated objects are thought to have had similar extraterrestrial origins ? including the Black Stone in Mecca, Saudi Arabia ? but Wadhwa says it is difficult to verify these assumptions because the objects have never been fully analysed scientifically. And none of these supposed meteorite fragments has been carved into a religious sculpture, making the Space Buddha the only one of its kind.

Meteoritic metal is associated with a number of ancient cultures, says Matthew Genge at Imperial College London. "There are reports of Egyptian necklaces including meteoritic metal," he says. "But there is no evidence that the Egyptians were aware of their extraterrestrial provenance."

Sky iron

In Tibet, though, meteoritic iron was long known as namchag, or "sky iron", says Buchner's team, suggesting the locals were aware of the origins of the unusual material.

"There is no definitive evidence that ancient peoples witnessed and revered meteorite falls," says Genge. "However, the chances are good. There are so many modern witnessed falls that ancient people must have seen them. They are such special events that they must have attracted awe and speculation."

The age of the Chinga meteorite means that no one alive when the Space Buddha was carved would have seen this particular rock fall from the sky. Instead it would have been recovered much later ? making it what geologists call a meteorite find.

That creates something of a problem, says Genge. How did ancient people come to venerate meteorites, or meteorite craters, without witnessing the moment of impact?

"One of the most puzzling examples is Gosses Bluff in Australia," he says. "This crater is 142 million years old, and yet the Aborigines hold that it formed by the fall of the baby of one of the celestial women from the sky. A strange coincidence perhaps."

Who's watching? 3-D TV is no hit with viewers

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Phil Orlins knows everything about producing TV in three dimensions. The ESPN producer has captured the undulating greens of Augusta National and the flying motor bikes of the X-Games for ESPN's 3-D channel. But he can only guess how well his shows resonate with viewers. That's because 3-D audiences are so small they can't be measured by Nielsen's rating system.

"The feedback on The Masters was fast and furious. You could go on Twitter at any moment, and there'd be comments coming in every minute about 3-D coverage," said Orlins while giving a tour of a production truck at this summer's X-Games. "But then you go to some other events where it's pretty quiet."

Orlins' problem is that fewer than 115,000 American homes are tuned into 3-D channels at any one time. That's less than a hundredth of the 20.2 million-strong audience that saw television's highest-rated show, "NCIS," this week. 3-D viewership is so tiny that The Nielsen Co.'s methods are unable to capture any meaningful data about viewers' programming preferences.

ESPN 3D is one of nine 3-D channels that launched in the years following the late 2009 release of James Cameron's "Avatar." The 3-D blockbuster won three Oscars and ranks as the highest-grossing film of all time, garnering $2.8 billion at the global box office.

"Avatar" was supposed to change everything. Enthusiastic television executives expected the movie to spur 3-D's transition to American living rooms, boosting sales of TVs and, they hoped, getting people to pay for 3-D channels.

That never happened.

Only 2 percent of TVs in the U.S. are able to show 3-D programming, according to the most recent data from research firm IHS Screen Digest. That's about 6.9 million sets out of 331 million. After this year's Christmas buying rush, IHS expects the number of 3-D-capable televisions in homes to jump to 19.3 million, mostly because many new larger TVs automatically include the technology. If you're in the market for a big-screen TV, you're likely to wind up with 3-D, too. Even so, 3-D TVs will amount to fewer than 6 percent of all sets.

"We've learned with every passing day that we were ahead of the curve further than we thought we were," said Bryan Burns, the business leader for ESPN 3D. "We hit the on-ramp earlier than we realized at the time."

At movie theaters, 3-D has attracted lots of viewers. But not at home. There's a supply problem: 3-D TV is expensive to produce, so there's not a lot of it. Of the content out there, some isn't very good. There's an equipment problem: Some people find the special glasses required for 3-D TV uncomfortable. And there's a money problem: Many wonder if it's worth the extra cost.

"It was kind of fascinating to me, but it's not all there," said Tim Carter, a graphic designer in Sarasota, Fla., who bought a large 3-D TV with other high-end features last year for about $1,800.

Today, the average 42-inch 3-D television costs about $900, according to IHS ? about $200 more than similar-sized, more basic models. A 3-D TV tends be more expensive because 3-D is one feature common to TVs with bigger screens. It is usually grouped with other upgrades that matter more to consumers, including motion-smoothing technology and light-emitting diodes that are more energy-efficient and display color contrast better than traditional liquid crystal display sets.

"There's very little direct consumer demand" for 3-D, said Tom Morrod, a TV technology analyst with IHS in London. "They don't see a value with it. Consumers associate value right now with screen size and very few other features."

A 3-D TV contains a high-tech chip and software that translates 3-D video feeds into the right- and left-eye images that create the 3-D effect for people wearing the right glasses. In some cases, special glasses can cost an extra $50 or so.

Watching home movies on disc requires a 3-D Blu-ray player that can cost another $120, and each set of 3-D Blu-ray discs costs about $27, according to IHS.

TV distributors now don't charge specifically for channels like ESPN 3D. But 3-D channels are only "free" if you're already paying up for a pricy package. They're bundled with add-ons like HD service and high-definition digital video recorders. For a DirecTV subscriber, for example, that means $200 high-definition digital video recorder and $10 per month for HD service.

All that for the privilege of watching 3-D at home in your pajamas.

Because of the cost, Carter said he's mainly sampled free 3-D movie trailers provided on-demand by his cable TV company. A trailer for the latest "Transformers" movie didn't make him more enthused. "One of the robots pops out at you, and it felt forced." He said that 3-D effects aren't noticeable much of the time. While he said he's not knocking the technology, he's disappointed with the way it's being used.

Sluggish demand for 3-D on TV has caused programmers to hit pause on rolling out new shows and channels.

In June, DirecTV turned its 24-hour channel, n3D, into a part-time network that only shows special event programming like the Olympics, in part to avoid the heavy use of reruns caused by a lack of new material. Last year, AT&T dropped ESPN 3D from its lineup, saying the $10 per month cost to subscribers wasn't justified given low demand.

So far, ESPN 3D is the most aggressive network in terms of shooting original 3-D productions. It has about 140 per year. It also has the widest distribution, according to research firm SNL Kagan, no doubt because popular sports network ESPN includes it in negotiations with distributors. Though few own the hardware to watch the channel, ESPN 3D now pipes into 60 million U.S. homes.

Without extra subscriber fees, it could be difficult to make a big business out of 3-D production, especially because it's more expensive than 2-D. Every 3-D camera set-up requires two cameras. They have to be mounted on a special computerized rig that aligns them. And someone in a back room has to adjust a knob that determines how cross-eyed the lenses are. That can require twice the manpower for the same camera position, boosting costs when revenues aren't going up very much.

Advertising, the other pillar of the TV channel business, is also hampered because of the lack of audience data.

That has resulted in an odd arrangement. Companies that run advertisements on ESPN 3D, like movie studios, actually have their ads played a second time in 2-D on ESPN and other channels so they can meet their goal of reaching a measurable number of people, Burns said. That uses up 2-D commercial airtime that might have been sold to other customers.

While he wouldn't say if it's profitable, Burns said ESPN 3D is still a revenue-generating business that is "doing well," because of how the network accounts for revenue from distributors and advertisers.

3-D TV is not a complete bust. Burns and others expect that as more TVs are sold with the capability, the more viewership will grow, just like it did for high-definition sets and programs a few years ago.

"It took five years before reporting systems caught up and we knew who actually had the service," Burns said of the launch of HD. "It's not unfamiliar territory to us. We've been down this road before."

For TV signal providers, carrying 3-D channels before they really become mainstream wins them points with their savviest technophile customers, the kind who jumped on the HD bandwagon early ?a decade ago.

In many ways, though, the comparison to HD isn't a good one.

Watching 3-D is a problem for about 6 percent of Americans with certain eye problems, according to Dr. Dominick Maino, a professor with the Illinois College of Optometry. They simply can't see in 3-D or suffer dizziness or nausea when watching.

And it won't get the same push that HD got by the hundreds of TV stations that switched to high-definition broadcasts in the last few years. Nor will it benefit from the nation's switch from analog to digital TV broadcasts in 2009.

Another awkward point: Some people just don't like 3-D. In a phone survey last November of 1,300 Americans who had seen 3-D TV, Leichtman Research Group found that 38 percent rated it poorly at 3 or below on a scale of 10. That's twice as many as rated it excellently, at 8 or higher.

That's a knock against 3-D that HD didn't have.

"It's one of those examples where seeing isn't believing, thus far," said Bruce Leichtman, president of Leichtman Research. "That's certainly not a great place to start."

Viewing gender-specific objects influences perception of gender identity

Thursday, September 27, 2012

Spending too much time looking at high heels may influence how a viewer perceives the gender of an androgynous face, according to new research published Sep. 26 in the open access journal PLOS ONE by Amir Homayoun Javadi of Technische Universit?t, Dresden and his colleagues. The study sheds new light on how the objects surrounding us may influence our perceptions of gender.

The authors found that when people view objects highly associated with one gender, like high heels for women or electric shavers for men, for a short period of time and are then asked to identify the gender of an androgynous face, they are more likely to identify it as being of the gender opposite to that associated with the stimuli.

Previous studies have demonstrated that continuous exposure to certain visual stimuli causes short and long term adaptations with temporary aftereffects due to repeated stimulation of specific pathways in the brain. For example, after prolonged exposure to a red screen, a viewer is more likely to perceive a white screen as being green (the perceptual opposite of red). This study, though, is the first demonstrating that such adaptation can occur for a more abstract feature like gender perception.

The authors suggest two possible explanations for their results. The first possibility they suggest is that common brain regions may be involved in identifying gender-associated objects and identifying the gender of androgynous faces, so the effect is akin to what occurs in the red screen-white screen example above. Alternately, the researchers suggest that a higher cognitive function of 'adapting to gender' may modulate the process of 'assigning gender', whether to an object or an androgynous face.

"This study highlights how exposure to objects in our environment can affect our perception of gender in everyday life" says Javadi, lead author of the paper.

Remain in the Market for the Long Term | Entrepreneur Magazine

Don?t let market fluctuations influence you unduly. Investment is a long game.

I regularly emphasise the importance of not deviating from an investment strategy when markets move up and down.

Every investor wants to make a fortune in the shortest possible time and the maxim ?how to make a small fortune quickly is to start with a large one? seems to be the only way.

Investors wanting to receive maximum returns have to take maximum risk but, conversely, the concept that the greater the risk, the greater the return, is a fallacy. Ask those who got involved in Ponzi schemes.

It boils down to the risk:return ratio which is a fundamental investing principle. The ratio can be interpreted as risk and reward, as in how much risk must you take to ensure you are aptly rewarded? Whenever you invest for growth there is risk, whether large or small.

With the new compliance regulations, financial advisors are compelled to record the advice given to a client and, as part of the advisor?s recommendations, a risk questionnaire needs to be completed which gives a corresponding score. Scores then determine the investor?s risk profile.

On a scale between low and high risk, those who stick to low risk are considered conservative investors. Those who favour high risk are considered aggressive investors and a middle position is moderately conservative or aggressive.

Investors feel inherently comfortable with their choice on the risk scale. Conservative investors are happy with their low risk profile, particularly when markets are down and there?s a lot of volatility, as they feel their decision is justified.

Regrettably, they rarely see these as great investment opportunities for the future and that their ?comfort zone? will cost them dearly in the long term. Aggressive investors feel their decisions are justified when markets are moving forward and they are able to see the volatile times through.

Finding your fit

It?s important to understand that there is no right or wrong position on the scale. But I see many investors remaining in their chosen category, even if it?s the wrong choice for them. By staying within their comfort zone when markets are down, they will miss out when markets recover as, I assure you, they always do.

I believe that the responsibility of a financial advisor is to understand, in consultation with the client, how much they need to accumulate for retirement and then assess whether their chosen risk profile is likely to provide what is needed.

For example, a moderately conservative investor may find they are taking too little risk and may retire with insufficient capital. By asking this question, the investor and advisor may need to raise the risk profile one or two notches. Remember that your financial advisor should not be taking you where you want to go with your investments but rather where you ought to be.

What?s your goal?

There are other criteria which determine an investor?s risk return profile. These relate to timeframe and their net worth.

Timeframes determine that any investor who anticipates needing a large sum of money in the short term cannot consider taking any risk. In my opinion, a one to three year time horizon is more a ?saving to spend? outlay, which cannot be viewed as investing for the long term. Those with long-term time horizons can afford to wait and ride out price fluctuations and the longer the timeframe the more likely they are to reap the rewards of quality investments.

The majority of global banks and institutions garner clients who want great returns and growth but want to take little or no risk.

I believe there is really only one question which needs to be asked and that is, ?How would you feel if you lost 25% of your capital in the next six months?? Few would be happy unless they fully understand the risk: return ratio and the effect of this on long-term growth.

A rodeo rider was released from a hospital after a bucking horse kicked him in the head during an event at Shawnee Mountain on Sunday.

Tim Kent was competing in the bareback competition, where riders try to stay on a bucking horse for 8 seconds. The rider holds onto a rawhide handle similar to a briefcase handle that's secured to the horse while it tries to throw the rider off.

Kent's handle, part of his personal equipment, was improperly adjusted and slid under the horse's belly, taking the rider with it, according to Marty Barnes, a member of the family owned business Barnes PRCA Rodeo that put on the show.

?The horse stepped on him? Barnes said. ?He must have hit him in the head at least once since he was knocked unconscious.?

Barns was in the ring as a pickup man to secure the horse after the ride was over.

Kent was life-flighted to Lehigh Valley Hospital where he was released either Sunday or Monday.

Kent is in his 20s, according to Barnes.

The accident was unusual for a rodeo. "I've seen this happen maybe twice in 30 years,? Barnes said.

Israel's only co-ed combat unit proves its worth

JERUSALEM (AP) ? A deadly shootout last week along Israel's border with Egypt has shined a spotlight on Israel's only mixed female and male combat unit, granting some recognition to a group that has faced much skepticism and often been the butt of jokes since its inception.

The Caracal battalion's response to the militant attack on Friday ? which left three gunmen dead, including one whom Israeli officials said was killed by a female soldier ? marked a major test for the unit that typically handles tame operations. One Israeli soldier also was killed.

On Sunday, Israeli newspapers and radio broadcasts glowed over the news that the co-ed battalion played a decisive role in thwarting the assailants' attack. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu boasted about the work of the unit ? named after a medium-sized cat native to the Middle East and Africa ? in his weekly Cabinet meeting. Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Benny Gantz traveled to the scene of the attack and congratulated the soldiers.

"If the Caracal force wasn't there in those critical moments, it's clear to everyone that we could have faced a difficult attack," Col. Guy Biton, the commander of the Sagi Brigade that oversees the battalion, told the Maariv daily newspaper.

Most Jewish Israeli citizens are drafted into their nation's defense forces when they turn 18. Women, however, typically serve less time than men and usually away from the battlefield, in administrative or technical positions. A minority serve in combat roles.

By contrast, 60 percent of Caracal's soldiers are women.

Women were barred from combat until 2000, the year Caracal was introduced as a way to ease females into combat duty. The unit was positioned in areas along Israel's borders with Jordan and Egypt. For years, the territory was calm, largely because Israel has peace deals with both neighbors. Soldiers who were there mostly worked to prevent drug and weapons' smuggling and while they were trained to neutralize an armed threat, they rarely faced one.

But in the last year and a half, since the fall of longtime Egyptian leader Hosni Mubarak, Caracal's usual patrolling area near Egypt has become a hotbed of militant activity. Egypt's vast Sinai peninsula is home to Islamic extremists who have staged attacks against Egyptian and Israeli targets. The Jordanian border has remained quiet.

In the most recent attack, a shootout on the Israel-Egypt border left one Israeli soldier and three assailants dead. The military said the militants were heavily armed and wearing explosive belts when they crossed into Israeli territory and opened fire on soldiers guarding a team of workers who were building a border fence meant to protect against just such attacks.

An Israeli forces spokeswoman said the troops quickly returned fire, killing the militants and preventing a major attack ? a coup for the women and men of Caracal. The battalion fought on Friday alongside soldiers from Israel's Artillery Corps. In line with its policy not to discuss troop deployment, the military declined to provide the battalion's size.

"I feel proud to know that finally people are coming to recognize and know what we are worth and what we are able to do," Amit Epstein, a former Caracal company commander, told Israel Radio.

The recognition comes to Caracal after years of challenges. Resolving logistical issues like building separate sleeping quarters and bathrooms were a first hurdle. But the unit has continued to grapple with widespread skepticism from a male-dominated military.

The female soldiers' ability to fight alongside men has been questioned. But the battalion's men also have been stigmatized, written off as too weak to be accepted into a regular unit or distracted by criticism that they would be unable to focus on their jobs while working so closely with women. Skeptics have also wondered how focused young men and women can be when working so closely with the opposite sex.

And the praise that followed Friday's incident was marred by a report Monday that one of the female Caracal soldiers chose to duck for cover rather than return fire during the border attack.

Israel Radio quoted the soldier as saying: "I didn't have a chance against them," referring to the militants. The soldier was not named in line with military policy.

Nonetheless, Doron Almog, who served as the head of Israel's southern command when the battalion was formed, was not surprised by the successful effort. He said the group is prepared for such attacks and expects it to continue to be called on for such dangerous operations.

And as the border with Egypt becomes increasingly volatile, Caracal will be able to continue to prove itself, he said.

"The best public relations strategy is to have a successful operation and to come and show results," said Almog.

Nazi Hunter Efraim Zuroff Continues To Pursue Investigation Of Alleged Auschwitz Guard

PHILADELPHIA ? The chief Nazi hunter with the Simon Wiesenthal Center says age and the passage of time are no barriers to investigating alleged Nazi activity during World War II.

If a person is charged with war crimes, you don't just ignore the crime because a suspect has reached old age, said Efraim Zuroff, who called the German-led investigation of now 87-year-old Johann "Hans" Breyer of Philadelphia a powerful message that such efforts will continue.

"Old age should not protect people who committed such heinous crimes," Zuroff said Monday by phone from Israel.

Germany has launched a war crimes investigation against Breyer on allegations that he served as an SS guard at the Auschwitz death camp complex after years of failed attempts by the U.S. to revoke his citizenship.

Breyer resolutely denied those allegations and told The Associated Press in an interview in his home late last week that he was never at the camp.

"I had nothing to do with the camp. I told them over and over," he said, recalling a yearslong failed effort by the U.S. to strip him of his citizenship.

Instead, Breyer said he was at a nearby SS camp where he was trained to use a light infantry cannon.

On Sunday, Breyer repeated that he's not been contacted by Germany nor notified that he's under any investigation.

"I heard this from you," he told an AP reporter, reiterating that he was never a guard.

On Monday, a few reporters were parked outside the three-level row home he shares with his wife. No one answered the door but a handwritten sign read: "We do not have any comment. Please leave."

Breyer did not respond to messages left at his home.

Some neighbors declined to comment while others did not answer their doors.

For more than a decade, the Department of Justice waged court battles to try to have Breyer deported. They largely revolved around whether Breyer had lied about his Nazi past in applying for immigration or whether he could have citizenship through his American-born mother.

That legal saga ended in 2003, with a ruling that allowed him to stay in the United States, mainly on the grounds that he had joined the SS as a minor and could therefore not be held legally responsible for participation in it.

The Justice Department noted that it had proved, in court, that Breyer was involved in "Nazi-sponsored acts of persecution while serving as an SS guard" at Buchenwald and Auschwitz during World War II.

"However, findings concerning his mother's birth and the date of his SS enlistment made it legally impossible to deport him from the United States," Rebekah Carmichael, a department spokeswoman, told the AP in an email Monday.

"As a general matter, the Department of Justice has a more than 40-year record of close cooperation with European governments that seek to prosecute cases involving Nazi crimes, including through sharing of evidence and facilitation of extradition and deportation," she said.

German officials have not yet filed charges against Breyer, but he could be charged with accessory to murder, the same legal theory that prosecutors in Munich used to try and convict former Ohio autoworker John Demjanjuk on charges served as a death camp guard at Sobibor in occupied Poland.

Ukrainian-born Demjanjuk, who died in a Bavarian nursing home in March while appealing his 2011 conviction, was the first person convicted in Germany solely on the basis of serving as a camp guard, with no evidence of involvement in a specific killing.

Under the new legal theory, anyone who was involved in the operation of a death camp was an accessory to murder.

About 1.5 million people, primarily Jews, were killed at the Auschwitz camp complex between 1940 and 1945.

Israel won't accept Egypt treaty changes: Lieberman

AFP - Israel will not accept alterations to its 1979 peace treaty with Egypt, Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman said on Sunday, as ties between the two countries continue to fray.

"There is not the slightest possibility that Israel will accept the modification of the peace treaty with Egypt," Lieberman told Israeli public radio. "We will not accept any modification of the Camp David accords."

The comments come as tensions rise between Egypt and Israel, with speculation the government of Egypt's Islamist President Mohamed Morsi could seek to alter parts of the decades-old treaty.

Ties are also strained over the issue of security in Egypt's Sinai, which borders Israel and has increasingly become a haven for militants, some of whom have used the territory as a launching ground for attacking the Jewish state.

On Friday, an Israeli soldier and three militants who infiltrated from Sinai were killed in a clash along the border, after troops opened fire on the gunmen as they crossed the frontier.

Israel has urged Egypt to tackle the growing lawlessness in Sinai, and Cairo has responded by boosting its military presence in the peninsula, but that has also raised concern in the Jewish state, because the Camp David treaty limits the number of Egyptian troops that can be present in the territory.

"Egypt must fulfill its obligations in Sinai," Lieberman said on Sunday.

Egypt launched an unprecedented military operation in the peninsula after militants killed 16 Egyptian border police in northern Sinai on August 5.

Israel has warned that it expects Cairo to withdraw the military reinforcements once the operation was over.

Ban on India Inc acquiring SC, ST land - Real Estate India

??|?? September 22, 2012 ?? 09:37am ??|Contributed by manoja

New Delhi: In a significant ruling, the Supreme Court today said that the land belonging to scheduled castes (SCs) or tribes (STs) cannot be bought by non-dalits, including companies as such transactions are unconstitutional.

A bench of justices K S Radhakrishnan and Dipak Misra gave the verdict on an appeal by the Rajasthan government against the state high court?s order holding such a sale to be valid in law.

The high court had passed its order on an appeal by a firm, Aanjaney Organic Herbal Pvt Ltd, against the refusal by the state authorities to recognise or grant mutation to the purchase of a plot by the company from a person belonging to scheduled caste.

?The Act is a beneficial legislation which takes special care to protect the interest of the members of Schedule Caste and Schedule Tribe.

?Section 42 (SC, ST Act) provides some general restrictions on sale, gift and bequest of the interest of Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe, in the whole or part of their holding.

?The reason for such general restrictions is not only to safeguard the interest of the members of Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe, but also to see that they are not being exploited by the members of non-Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe.

?We find Section 42(b) of the Act has to be read along with the constitutional provisions and, if so read, the expression `who is not a member of the Scheduled Caste or Scheduled Tribe would mean a person other than those who has been included in the public notification as per Articles 341 and 342 of the Constitution,? said Justice Radhakrishnan, writing the judgement for the bench.

That property was purchased on September 26, 2005 through a registered sale deed for a consideration of Rs 60,000.

The high court had held that such a transfer was valid as the company being a `juristic person? does not have a caste and, therefore, any transfer made by a Scheduled Caste person would not be hit by Section 42(b) of the Act.

?If the contention of the company is accepted, it can purchase land from Scheduled Caste / Scheduled Tribe and then sell it to a non-Scheduled Caste and Schedule Tribe, a situation the legislature wanted to avoid.

?A thing which cannot be done directly can not be done indirectly by over-reaching the statutory restriction.

?We are, therefore, of the view that the reasoning of the high court that the respondent being a juristic person, the sale effected by a member of Scheduled Caste to a juristic person, which does not have a caste, is not hit by Section 42 of the Act, is untenable and gives a wrong interpretation to the above mentioned provision,? the apex court said.

Voters in battleground states on Romney's '47 percent' comment

Insensitive and out of touch? Or simply speaking the cold hard truth? Voters in the states still up for grabs have different opinions on the impact of Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney's controversial '47 percent' comment.

Mitt Romney's offhanded comment that as a candidate he doesn't worry about the 47 percent of Americans who pay no income taxes has quickly entered the bloodstream in the presidential campaign's most hard-fought states.

His comment, in a video revealed this week, is prompting expressions of shock ? but also shrugs ? from Nevada to Florida to New Hampshire and the handful of battleground states in between.

Will it sway an election expected to be close?

There was much discussion in the relatively few states that are still considered competitive, likely to decide the race. Here, as elsewhere, the question was whether Romney was showing himself to be insensitive or merely delivering the hard truth a nation at an economic crossroads must face.

People's answers could make an Election Day difference in states where the race is tight.

"It sounds like he's leaving out half of America, if you ask me," said Gary Gabriel, an independent from suburban Columbus, Ohio, who decided in light of Romney's comments to support President Barack Obama.

But the remarks also reaffirmed the opinions of some Romney supporters.

"I worry a lot about the society we're turning into, more of an entitlement mentality," said Randy Schumaker, a Denver-area IT manager.

It all underscored the campaign's focus on the economy. And it stoked deeper questions about voters' expectations about the government's role in Americans' daily lives.

Outrage. Nodding approval. Both followed Romney's contention that 47 percent of Americans support Obama and that they "are dependent upon government" and "believe that they are victims, who believe that government has a responsibility to care for them."

In a Gallup poll taken Tuesday, about a third of the surveyed registered voters said they would be less likely to support Romney in light of the remarks, But more said the comments would not affect their votes. And most voters have already made up their minds on whom they will support, according to this and other surveys.

More voter voices:

"He does not have that empathy that says he really cares," said Michael Symes from the economically hard-hit Las Vegas area.

Student Morgan Palmer said he needs his college loan to get through Christopher Newport University in Newport News, Va. But he doesn't consider himself a government dependent. "I was really shocked," the 18-year-old freshman from Chantilly, Va., said. "This is a long-term investment, not short-term dependency."

Outside LaCrosse, Wis., however, retired mortgage loan officer Shirley Otto said Romney was merely delivering an unvarnished version of the straight talk the nation needs to hear.

"I'd rather be told the truth ... than be told something just to win an election," Otto said.

Romney's comments were recorded without his awareness at a private May fundraiser in Florida. They were provided to the magazine Mother Jones, which released them Monday.

By that evening, they had aired on evening news broadcasts in key battleground markets such as Denver and Milwaukee. By Tuesday morning, The Des Moines Register in Iowa and The Columbus Dispatch in Ohio featured front-page headlines about Romney's words.

NuSTAR celebrates first 100 days

ScienceDaily (Sep. 21, 2012) ? Sept. 21, 2012, marks 100 days since NASA's Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array, or NuSTAR, launched into space from the L-1011 "Stargazer" aircraft. Since completing its 30-day checkout, the telescope has been busy making its first observations of black holes, super-dense dead stars and the glowing remains of exploded stars.

In this early mission phase, the NuSTAR team has been getting to know their telescope better and learning how to point it precisely at targets of interest. NuSTAR has the longest mast of any astronomical telescope ever launched. The 33-foot (10-meter) flexible structure is part of the mission's innovative design, allowing NuSTAR to focus high-energy X-rays into sharp images for the first time. The team has been spending time understanding the mast's mechanics and how they affect the telescope's pointing.

In addition, NuSTAR has continued to team up with other observatories, including NASA's Chandra and Swift telescopes, to make coordinated observations. These joint observations allow astronomers to interpret data from their telescopes more precisely, and to gain a better overall understanding of some of the most extreme events in the cosmos.

As its journey continues, NuSTAR will explore many more targets in our galaxy and beyond.

NuSTAR is a Small Explorer mission led by the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena and managed by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, also in Pasadena, for NASA's Science Mission Directorate in Washington. The spacecraft was built by Orbital Sciences Corporation, Dulles, Va. Its instrument was built by a consortium including Caltech; JPL; the University of California, Berkeley; Columbia University, New York; NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, Md.; the Danish Technical University in Denmark; Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Livermore, Calif.; and ATK Aerospace Systems, Goleta, Calif. NuSTAR's mission operations center is at UC Berkeley, with the Italian Space Agency providing its equatorial ground station located at Malindi, Kenya. The mission's outreach program is based at Sonoma State University, Rohnert Park, Calif. NASA's Explorer Program is managed by Goddard. JPL is managed by Caltech for NASA.

Mom's letter: Gillispie verbally abused son often

(AP) ? The mother of a teenager at Billy Gillispie's summer basketball camp claims in a letter to a top school administrator that the former Texas Tech coach repeatedly verbally abused her son, according to a document obtained Friday by The Associated Press.

The woman wrote that other coaches at the camp told her 17-year-old son that Gillispie "likes to pick someone and try to 'break them' for some reason," and that the young man "wasn't doing anything wrong," according to a letter to Texas Tech's chancellor obtained through an open records request.

Gillispie resigned from Texas Tech on Thursday, citing health concerns after he was hospitalized twice in the past month. The 52-year-old Gillispie stepped down amid allegations he mistreated players on his team.

The mother's name is redacted in the Aug. 20 letter to university chancellor Kent Hance. No written reply was made but Hance called the Texas Tech alum, who is a teacher, to discuss the matter, officials said.

On the camp's first day in late June the woman's son, now a high school senior, overthrew a pass to another camper.

"It happens," the mother wrote in her letter. "That's the only thing he thought brought on the barrage of insults spurted from the mouth of your coach Gillispie. This was the first of many such verbal attacks."

On Aug. 29, several Texas Tech players went to athletic director Kirby Hocutt with claims of mistreatment by Gillispie.

Two days later, the school announced it was scrutinizing Gillispie and his leadership. The same day CBSsports.com reported that Gillispie made players practice long hours, which led to injuries.

Just hours before Gillispie and Hocutt were to meet Aug. 31 to discuss the players' claims, the coach called 911 and was taken to a Lubbock hospital where he stayed for six days. A week later Gillispie traveled to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., where he said he was treated for kidney problems, abnormal headaches and high blood pressure. He returned to Lubbock Sept. 14.

He said doctors ordered him to avoid stress for 30 days. Hocutt removed Gillispie from making day-to-day decisions about the program so he could focus on his health. Chris Walker, who took over day-to-day operations, will remain in that position until an interim head coach is chosen.

On Sept. 5, the school disclosed it had reprimanded Gillispie and an assistant in January for exceeding practice-time limits last fall. Hocutt docked the team twice the number of hours that Gillispie had exceeded during a two-week period in October, or 12 hours and 20 minutes.

The NCAA allows 20 hours of practice per week.

Gillispie did not immediately return a message seeking comment. Athletic department spokesman Blayne Beal said Hocutt declined comment on the latest allegations against Gillispie.

The mother also said Gillispie had little interaction with the campers, "other than to walk around and briefly look on as they worked out ? and scream rude remarks, apparently, as he saw fit."

She thought about pulling her son from the overnight camp June 24-27 but she and her husband, also an educator, decided it was important for her son to learn how to deal with all types of people, the letter states. Her son just stayed away from Gillispie, befriended other coaches and "did his best to stay with them, so there would be witnesses," the mother wrote.

Nothing excuses Gillispie's actions, she wrote near the end of the 1?-page letter to Hance.

"Coach Gillispie's behavior was inappropriate and unnecessary," the mother wrote. "Our job as teachers is to motivate and educate and empower. It is not our job to attempt to break a child's spirit through constant insult and negative feedback."

(AP) ? Waving American flags and space shuttle toys, hundreds of people lined the streets and crowded the airport Wednesday as they watched space shuttle Endeavour touch down in Houston on its way to be permanently displayed in California.

But for many, the experience was bittersweet, tinged with an aftertaste of having been cheated of something they believe should rightfully have been theirs.

"I think that it's the worst thing that they can do, rotten all the way," said 84-year-old Mary Weiss, clinging to her walker just before Endeavour, riding piggy back on a jumbo jet, landed after flying low over Gulf Coast towns, New Orleans and then downtown Houston and its airports.

Space City, partly made famous by Tom Hanks when he uttered the line "Houston, we have a problem" in the movie "Apollo 13," has long tied its fortune to a mix of oil and NASA. Astronauts train in the humid, mosquito-ridden city. Many call it home years after they retire. The Johnson Space Center and an adjacent museum hug Galveston Bay.

Yet Houston's bid for a shuttle was rejected after the White House retired the fleet last summer to spend more time and money on reaching destinations such as asteroids and Mars. Instead, Houston got a replica that used to be displayed at the Kennedy Space Center.

"I think it's a pretty rotten deal, basically," said Scott Rush, 54, of Crystal Beach, Texas, wearing a T-shirt proudly proclaiming that he had witnessed Endeavour's final launch. "The one we're getting is a toy. An important toy, but a toy nonetheless."

Back-to-back delays in the ferry flight resulted in one day being cut from the Houston visit. But Wednesday dawned under bright sunshine and cooler-than-normal temperatures, drawing hundreds of excited people, many of whom brought children or grandchildren along.

After landing, the Endeavour rolled slowly in front of the cheering crowd. It circled and preened like a model on the catwalk, giving awed spectators an opportunity to take pictures from a variety of angles.

"I want to go on it," said 3-year-old Joshua Lee as he headed to the landing area with his mother and grandmother.

Joshua's mother, Jacqueline Lee of Houston, viewed the landing as an educational opportunity she had to share with her son.

"It's history in the making and it probably will be the end and I don't know if he'll get to see this again," Lee said. "I wish we were able to rally enough to have it stay here in Texas since we've had a major input in all the history of NASA."

NASA still plays a large role in Houston, and astronaut Clayton Anderson, who lived on the International Space Station from June to November 2007, encouraged people to focus on a new era of space exploration.

"The shuttles are a wonderful legacy, a huge part of Houston, but now it's time to look to the future," said Anderson, who lives in the Houston suburb of League City.

Earlier Wednesday, hundreds gathered in Cape Canaveral, Fla., to bid Endeavour farewell. The shuttle will spend the night in Houston before continuing its journey to Los Angeles International Airport, where it's scheduled to land Friday.

In mid-October, Endeavour will be transported down city streets to the California Science Center.

This is the last flight for a space shuttle. Atlantis will remain at Kennedy for display. Discovery already is at the Smithsonian Institution, parked at a hangar in Virginia since April.

Endeavour ? the replacement for the destroyed Challenger shuttle ? made its debut in 1992 and flew 25 times in space before retiring. It logged 123 million miles in space and circled Earth nearly 4,700 times.

Connie West, 60, of Deerfield, Kan., viewed the landing with friends from Wichita. The group expressed sadness that the shuttle program had ended. They felt the pain of Houstonians who felt cheated, and agreed they should have had a shuttle.

Still, the excitement of seeing one was enough on Wednesday.

"I felt awesome," West said. "I wanted to see it make its last flight and couldn't get there (to Florida), so this is awesome."
