While researchers from the University of Freiburg under the direction of Olga Speck are busy studying the biological and chemical aspects of the model provided by liana plants, Rolf Luchsinger and Markus Rampf at Empa's Center for Synergetic Structures are working on technical solutions for polymer membranes. Luchsinger's impetus, however, concerns neither inflatable boats nor air mat-tresses but rather load-carrying pneumatic structures for lightweight construction. His tensairity beams serve as elements for quickly erected, lightweight bridges and roofing.

The study's goal is to understand under which conditions a hole plugs itself up if the foam expands on a membrane following damage. Within the scope of his dissertation, Rampf is studying this process with the help of an experimental setup which places a membrane under pneumatic pressure and then punctures it with a nail. The researchers have already achieved successful interim results. A two-component foam of polyurethane and polyester suddenly expands when exposed to the excessive pressure which arises when air rushes out of a hole.

?It works in the lab,? notes Luchsinger, ?and we're achieving high repair factors.? What does this mean in the real world? Take the case of an air mattress with a volume of 200 litres. Given a certain-sized hole, previously it was necessary to pump it up every five minutes; it now holds for eight hours ? enough time to sleep through the night. ?We now know enough about the foam that we can enter into discussions with membrane manufacturers about commercializing this technology,? according to Luchsinger, when describing the next steps.

Greek default talk gathers pace (Reuters)

ATHENS/WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? Talk of a possible Greek default gained pace on Friday while a pledge by the world's major economies to prevent Europe's debt crisis from undermining banks and the global economy failed to lift financial markets for long.

Greek Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos was quoted by two newspapers as saying an orderly default with a 50 percent haircut for bondholders was one of three possible scenarios for resolving the heavily indebted euro zone nation's fiscal woes.

Officials played down the reports and Venizelos described them in a statement as an unhelpful distraction from the central task of sticking to Greece's EU/IMF bailout program.

European Central Bank governing council member Klaas Knot told a Dutch daily a Greek default could no longer be ruled out, the first ECB policymaker to speak openly of the prospect.

"It is one of the scenarios," Dutch daily Het Financieele Dagblad quoted him as saying.

"All efforts are aimed at preventing this, but I am now less certain in excluding a bankruptcy than I was a few months ago," Knot said, adding that he wondered "whether the Greeks realize how serious the situation is."

More signs emerged on Friday that European governments are working on recapitalizing vulnerable banks, with France's top market regulator saying 15 to 20 banks needed extra capital, although no French ones "at this stage.

The International Monetary Fund reckons Europe's banks could need to recapitalize to the tune of 200 billion euros and many bank analysts are far gloomier than the Fund.

The European Commission said European banks had already received 420 billion euros in funds since 2008 and were in much better shape than three years ago.

"The recapitalization of European banks is something that is ongoing, it is something that is already happening," Commission spokesman Olivier Bailly told a regular briefing.

European shares fell again, leaving them on course for a fifth straight month of losses, after a commitment from G20 finance ministers and central bankers to "take all necessary actions to preserve the stability of the banking system and financial markets as required" failed to placate investors.

A statement issued after G20 talks in Washington said the 17-nation euro zone would implement "actions to increase the flexibility of the EFSF and to maximize its impact" by mid-October.

But it left unclear whether they would go beyond an already agreed widening of the euro zone bailout fund's powers, which has so far failed to reassure.

Newspaper Ta Nea said Venizelos had told Socialist lawmakers behind closed doors that the government's central scenario was to stick to austerity plans to receive a second 109 billion ($146 billion) bailout and avoid bankruptcy.

The alternatives were either an agreed restructuring of Greek debt with a 50 percent reduction in the face value of government bonds, or a disorderly default, he said.

Greek bank shares fell by nine percent on the reports, prompting Venizelos to say in a statement: "All other discussions, rumors, comments, scenarios which are diverting our attention from this central target and Greece's political obligation ... do not help our common European task."

Deutsche Bank said European banks may face a bigger-than-expected hit from an internationally agreed swap arrangement on Greek government debt, which has still to be sealed.

Private sector creditors agreed in July to take a 21 percent loss on Greek bonds maturing before 2020, but the loss is more likely to be 25 percent or more, said Charlotte Jones, in charge of group controlling at Germany's biggest lender.

The European Union's top economic official, Olli Rehn, said in a speech in Washington that the EU was doing everything to avoid an uncontrolled default. He did not explicitly rule out an orderly restructuring of Greek debt, which many economists see as inevitable.

Venizelos was flying to Washington for weekend meetings of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank and is expected to discuss Greece's position with fellow finance ministers on the sidelines.

The government approved a raft of more draconian austerity measures this week, including putting 30,000 public employees on a path to redundancy, cutting pensions and raising taxes, in an effort to secure the next 8 billion euro loan installment vital to avoid running out of money in mid-October.

LEVERAGE?

Shares of several European banks have plunged and funding costs have risen as investors worried about exposure to debt issued by Greece and other debt-heavy European countries.

G20 participants did not say how the 440 billion euro EFSF might be altered although French Finance Minister Francois Baroin used the word "leverage" in comments to reporters.

The United States has previously proposed that Europe could leverage up the European Financial Stability Facility, giving it more firepower to protect the euro zone and its banks. German politicians and central bankers say that would be illegal.

A U.S. official, speaking after the G20 meeting, said the group showed a heightened sense of urgency but did not discuss a specific mechanism to leverage or expand the bailout fund.

Politicians in northern Europe, especially in Germany, have opposed dedicating more money to offset what they see as the profligacy of countries such as Greece. Those tensions have also flared within the European Central Bank over its role in buying bonds of struggling euro zone states.

However, Europe has come under heavy pressure from the United States and other countries to take bolder steps.

Earlier on Thursday, U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner voiced optimism that Europe would devote more of its own resources to backstop euro area governments and banks.

"I am very confident they're going to move in the direction of expanding (their) effective financial capacity," he said. "They're just trying to figure out how to get there in a way that is politically attractive."

The leaders of seven big economies stressed the need to contain the debt crisis, and finance officials from the so-called BRICS countries, including heavyweights China, Brazil and India, said they would consider giving more funds to the IMF to boost global stability.

But India said developing countries were not in a good position to bail out richer economies and the U.S. official said the G20 had not talked about emerging economies providing the IMF with more funds.

In America, it's starting to feel as if there are two housing markets. One for the rich and one for everyone else.

Consider foreclosure-ravaged Detroit. In the historic Green Acres district, a haven for hipsters, a pristine, three-bedroom brick Tudor recently sold for $6,000 ? about what a buyer would have paid during the Great Depression.

Yet just 15 miles away, in the posh suburban enclave of Birmingham, bidding wars are back. Multi-million-dollar mansions are selling quickly. Sales this August were up 21 percent from the previous year. The country club has ended its stealth discounts on new memberships. And Main Street's retail storefronts are full.

"We're getting more showings, more offers and more sales," says Ronnie Keating, a real estate agent with Sotheby's International.

Think of this housing market as bipolar. In the luxury sector, the recession is a memory and sales and prices are rising. But everywhere else, the market is moving sideways or getting worse.

In the housing market inhabited by most Americans, prices have fallen 30 percent or more since the peak in 2007. That's a steeper decline than during the Depression. Some people have had their homes on the market for a year without a single offer.

Almost a quarter of American homeowners owe more on their house than it's worth. Another quarter have less than 20 percent equity. About half of homeowners couldn't get a mortgage if they applied today, says Paul Dales, senior U.S. economist for Capital Economics.

But then there is the other housing market, occupied by 1.5 percent of the U.S. population, according to Zillow.com. The one with outdoor kitchens and in-home spas; with his-and-her boudoirs and closets the size of starter houses. The one that is not local but global, with international buyers bidding in all cash. And where the gyrations of the stock market are cause for conversation, not cutting expenses.

In this land of luxury properties, the Great Recession seems over. Prices of $1 million-plus properties have risen 0.7 percent since February, according to Zillow. Prices of houses under $1 million have fallen more than 1.5 percent.

Normally, these two segments of the housing market rise and fall together. But now, they're moving in opposite directions.

"Luxury is the best performing segment of the housing market right now," says Zillow.com chief economist Stan Humphries.

After every recession since World War II, housing has led the economic recovery. Not this time. The renewed vitality in the comparatively small market for luxury homes is not enough to power a full-blown recovery. This bifurcation in the market is yet another reason Michelle Meyer, the chief economist at Bank of America Merrill Lynch, says her housing outlook is "increasingly downbeat."

The phenomenon is not limited to real estate. You can see the same split in other gauges of the economy. Sales at Saks versus Walmart. Pay on Wall Street versus Main Street. Corporate profits versus family balance sheets.

The divide is also making credit a perk of the rich. Mortgage rates are the lowest in decades. But what good are absurdly cheap rates if you can't get a mortgage? The banks aren't granting credit to anyone "who even has a smudge on their application," says Jonathan Miller, founder of real estate consulting firm Miller Samuel. Applications for new mortgages languish at 10-year lows.

Across the country, prices on high-end homes fell after the subprime crash in the fall of 2008. The price on the $25 million mansion became $20 million, then $15 million. Such "bargains" are pushing more luxury buyers to commit to more deals.

There are other factors, too. In Detroit, a recovering auto industry is helping propel high-end sales. All those car executives who have helped turnaround the American auto industry used to rent. Now they are using their performance bonuses to buy homes.

Wall Street's recovery has brought back the market for mansions in the Hamptons, on Long Island, where the number of closings has returned to the 2007 level, and for luxury co-ops in New York City. And because of social-network riches in Silicon Valley, twice as many homes have sold for $5 million or more this year than last.

But in the other housing market, an apartment tower built in 2007 in San Jose, Calif., recently converted to all-rental. The building had not sold a single unit. In Miami, a city that exemplifies the foreclosure epidemic, idled cranes dot the skyline. Unemployment shot up again this summer from 12 percent to 14 percent, a level not seen since the energy crisis in 1973. There are so many two-bedroom condos in gated communities with golf courses, private pools and rustic jogging paths that you can pick one up for $25,000, 66 percent off the price five years ago. But luxury condos priced at $1 million or more are selling as rapidly as they did during the boom.

"In the 20 years that I have been in South Florida real estate, I have never seen a greater divide between those who have and those who have not," says Peter Zalewski, founder of the real estate firm Condo Vultures.

One big factor in the divide is foreign cash, at least in the world of property. For international buyers, U.S. real estate is the new undervalued asset, the new fire sale, and foreigners are big buyers of luxury properties. International clients bought $82 billion worth of U.S. residential real estate last year, up from $66 billion in 2009. In states like Florida, international buyers account for a third of purchases, up from 10 percent in 2007.

"Luxury properties are drawing buyers from all over the world," says CoreLogic's chief economist, Mark Fleming.

That's true even in such seemingly all-American enclaves as Detroit. Step off a plane at the city's futuristic new airport and the internationalization of the Motor City is obvious. All the signs ? as well as the announcements on the public address system ? are in both Chinese and English.

In the middle of the terminal sits a five-star Westin Hotel, the better to serve the global executive class that jets in and out as the U.S. auto industry regains its footing. Many of them are buying in Birmingham, where home values are up 3.1 percent this year, according to Zillow.com.

In Birmingham, local store owners say business is as good as it was during the boom years last decade. Chasta Fase, who owns Old World Olive Press, a boutique shop that sells $30 bottles of olive oil from all around the world says business "has been just awesome" since she opened her doors in November. And since April, she says, customers have been spending more than ever.

Real estate agent Keating says the same is happening to her sales. In June, she sold a lakefront mansion in Birmingham to a Russian entrepreneur. He had purchased a local steel company that he plans to turn around.

"They're coming from all over," says Keating, who for the past 30 years has sold most of the car barons their homes, from Roger Smith, the former CEO of General Motors, to former Chrysler CEO Bob Nardelli. "I don't know who any of them are anymore."

Manning, Hixon lead Giants over Rams - Fantasy Sports

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) ? Steve Spagnuolo and the St. Louis Rams came to the Meadowlands bearing gifts and the New York Giants readily accepted them.

Eli Manning threw two touchdown passes and linebacker Michael Boley scored on a 65-yard fumble return to lead New York to a 28-16 victory over the mistake-prone Rams on Monday night in the first matchup between Giants coach Tom Coughlin and Spagnuolo, his former defensive coordinator.

This one was ugly with mistakes by the Rams (0-2) giving New York (1-1) a crucial win after a disappointing loss to Washington in the season opener.

All four of New York's touchdowns resulted directly from St. Louis mistakes.

Manning hit Hakeem Nicks with a 3-yard TD pass after a muffed punt and Domenik Hixon made a spectacular juggling grab on a 22-yard score after a busted coverage late in the first half.

Sam Bradford threw a touchdown pass and Josh Brown kicked three short field goals for the Rams, who moved up and down the field except in the red zone.

Bradford might have made the biggest mistakes, throwing a pass backward and seeing Boley run it into the end zone.

It was that kind of night for the Rams.

The Rams killed themselves in the red zone. They settled for three short field goals after drives stalled inside the Giants 10, with the first coming after they got a first-and-goal at the 1 following a 68-yard catch and run by Danario Alexander.

New York built a 21-6 halftime lead and was never threatened again.

After Manning threw an interception deep in Rams' territory on the opening drive, the Giants looked lost for a couple of minutes, until the Rams woke them up with their first big mistake.

It resulted because St. Louis was without regular punt returner Danny Amendola.

Greg Salas took his place and muffed Steve Weatherford's punt with Dave Tollefson recovering at the 38.

Nicks, who was questionable for the game with a bruised knee, put New York ahead with the 3-yard TD catch. The score came after New York got a first down at the Rams' 9 after Bradley Fletcher was called for pass interference against Nicks.

A 25-yard field goal by Brown closed the gap to 7-6 later in the quarter, and the Rams seemed to be in position to take the lead early in the second quarter when Bradford moved them to the Giants 27.

However on third-and-8, Bradford tried to throw a halfback screen to Williams who was lined up as a receiver. The pass was thrown backward, making it a lateral and Boley picked up the fumble and ran 65 yards for a touchdown and a 14-6 lead.

The margin grew to 21-6 just before halftime when cornerback Al Harris let Mario Manningham run past him on a first-and-10 from the Giants 47 and Manning hit him in stride for a 31-yard gain.

Hixon made a one-handed catch of Manning's pass - juggling the ball three times with his right hand - for a 22-yard touchdown. He seemed to hurt his right knee on the play and barely played in the second half. He missed all last season after tearing the ACL in his right knee in June.

A 17-yard pass interference penalty against Justin King kept the Giants' opening drive in the second half alive and Jacobs scored one play after Manning got New York a first down with a 23-yard screen pass to Ahmad Bradshaw.

Bradford closed the scoring with a 19-yard touchdown pass to Alexander late in the third quarter.

Two-time Pro Bowl defensive end Justin Tuck played for the Giants after missing the season opener with a neck injury and had five tackles and 1 1/2 sacks.

Fashion guru and TV host Carson Kressley stole the show with a high-energy, all-out, sparkling routine that showed off his Jagger swagger.

Fire at prison in Iraqi capital kills 6 inmates (AP)

BAGHDAD ? Police say an early morning fire at a prison in Iraq's capital has killed six inmates.

Two police officers say at least 26 other inmates have been treated for smoke inhalation and other injuries from Monday's blaze.

Medics at Kindi and Ibin Nafees hospitals confirmed the casualties. All spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to release the information.

It was not immediately clear what caused the fire at an Interior Ministry prison in Baladiyat, a mostly Shiite neighborhood in eastern Baghdad.

It took firefighters about an hour to extinguish the blaze.
