Red Hot Chili Peppers' I'm With You: Don't Call It A 'Comeback'

'What did we come back from? Malaria?' frontman Anthony Kiedis says of first album in five years.

In one of the first stories written about the Red Hot Chili Peppers' I'm With You, Rolling Stone's David Fricke referred to the disc as the band's "comeback album," a phrase that would seem to make sense to most people, considering it was not only the band's first effort in five years, but also their first since the departure of longtime guitarist John Frusciante.

It should be noted, however, that RHCP frontman Anthony Kiedis is not "most people." Because to him, while I'm With You is many different things, it most certainly isn't a comeback.

"What did we come back from? Malaria?" he laughed. "Maybe [Fricke meant it] in the traditional sense of the word, like 'coming back' from our break. ... But [words like] 'comeback,' 'reunion,' I don't know. We took a moment to reflect and consider the possibilities, and we're really fortunate Josh [Klinghoffer] was available and wanting to join forces with us. ... We didn't really ever lose full momentum, so it wasn't like we disbanded and re-banded, we just got kind of flotatious and then reformed together in a new configuration. 'Comeback' sounds like you quit and then started again, we didn't quite quit."

"Quite" is the operative word. After all, I'm With You comes after a lengthy two-year hiatus and an even longer bout of soul-searching. "It's the first time the band took more than a couple months off probably in the last 10 years," new guitarist Klinghoffer said.

Anthony Keidis told us he feels like RHCP are a "new band" on I'm With You.

While they never seriously considered calling it quits, even Kiedis will admit that the Peppers' break was necessary. In fact, it probably helped save the band. Because when they finally emerged from their hibernation, with a new member and a new lease on life, they were rejuvenated, reloaded and — most important of all — reborn.

Which is why, though Kiedis won't call I'm With You a "comeback album," he's got no shortage of other adjectives to describe it and the newfound joy it's brought him and his bandmates.

"It does feel incredibly fresh, and I feel as excited or more excited about this period — from the writing to the recording to the playing to the anticipation of going on tour — as I've ever felt about anything that we've done, from the beginning," he said. "Sitting here, doing these interviews, listening to Josh, I often just go into a daydream of playing these songs live, and it's the same feeling that I got in 1983, when I couldn't sleep the night before a show, and if I did fall asleep, I would have a surreal little dream about the show itself; and, you know, I still have that feeling about this record and the inevitability of playing live, and kind of dreaming of set-list possibilities. ... It's a good feeling."

Iran warns NATO against entering Syria "quagmire" (Reuters)

TEHRAN (Reuters) ? Iran warned NATO on Sunday against any temptation to intervene in Syria, saying that rather than the defeating a regime it would be bogged down in a "quagmire" similar to Iraq or Afghanistan.

Syria's closest ally in the Middle East, Iran has in recent days tempered its strong support for President Bashar al-Assad with calls for him to respect the "legitimate demands" of his people.

But with the fall of Libya's Muammar Gaddafi, aided by NATO bombings, Tehran is concerned at the possible, if unlikely, prospect of something similar happening in Syria.

"Syria is the front-runner in Middle Eastern resistance (to Israel) and NATO cannot intimidate this country with an attack," Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi told the official IRNA news agency.

"If, God forbid, such a thing happened, NATO would drown in a quagmire from which it would never be able to escape...

"If the West should want to follow the same course as they have done in Iraq and Afghanistan they would not realize the desired result."

The United Nations says 2,200 people have been killed since Assad sent in tanks and troops to crush demonstrations that erupted in March after the presidents of Tunisia and Egypt were toppled by popular protests.

While most neighboring countries have criticized the crackdown, Tehran has explicitly backed Assad, although Salehi said on Saturday that "governments must be responsive to the legitimate demands of (their) people ... be it Syria, Yemen or other countries."

Norwegian researchers have developed a new test that checks a person's sweat to monitor blood sugar levels.

The sweat meter can be attached to a smartphone. The phone can then alert patients when their blood sugar is getting low.

It would benefit athletes or patients who don't get the usual warning symptoms, such as palpitations, sweating and intense hunger, the researchers said. Right now, the only way to check blood sugar levels is with a blood test.

The sweat meter works because a diabetic patient's sweat pattern changes when blood sugar levels are too low.

"The advantage of the sweat meter is that the patient doesn't have to prick themselves. All you need to do is paste an electrode on your skin," researcher Orjan Martinsen of the University of Oslo said in the research magazine Apollon.

Christian Tronstad, a medical technology researcher at Oslo University Hospital, said ideally, the electrode would be on the skin constantly to monitor the patient.

The Canadian Diabetes Association says more than nine million Canadians live with diabetes or prediabetes. About 10% of those have Type 1 diabetes is a contributing factor in the deaths of approximately 41,500 Canadians annually.

Vt. officials reject criticism over evacuations (AP)

BERLIN, Vt. ? Vermont officials say it would not have helped to issue more extensive evacuation orders before the arrival of Tropical Storm Irene because it was impossible to tell where flooding would be at its worst.

Both Gov. Peter Shumlin and Sen. Patrick Leahy say there are several instances around the state where one town was unscathed, while another in the same river valley was devastated.

Leahy said Monday there was concern that telling people to go to another location would have put them in more danger than if they stayed home.

The men were responding to criticism voiced by some in the national media that Vermont was not aggressive enough about ordering evacuations.

The missing component of a hybrid lager yeast has been located in the wilds of Patagonia

A stowaway strain of yeast, crossing the Atlantic centuries ago, may be responsible for a cool quarter-trillion-dollar beverage industry today.

Lager beer, which currently accounts for more than half the global beer market, relies on the yeast Saccharomyces pastorianus. Lager brewers ferment their product at relatively cool temperatures, then condition it under refrigeration, and S. pastorianus can tolerate lower temperatures than can ale-producing yeasts. The so-called cryo-tolerant lager yeast is a hybrid of the ale yeast S. cerevisiae and another yeast species that had long eluded conclusive identification.

Now a group of researchers based in Argentina, the U.S. and Portugal says they have identified the wild yeast that combined with S. cerevisiae to form the cryo-tolerant lager yeast S. pastorianus. The team reported its finding in a study published online August 22 in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

The wild yeast, which has been named Saccharomyces eubayanus, was discovered in the beech forests of South America's Patagonia region, thousands of kilometers from the Bavarian cellars where lager brewing took hold in the 15th century. Patagonia's beeches and the yeast species they host endure relatively low average temperatures, which might explain why the newly described S. eubayanus yeast would lend cryo-tolerance to its hybrid yeast offspring.

The Patagonian yeast could have hitched a ride on food, on pieces of wood or in beverages once sailing vessels began crossing the Atlantic, says study co-author Chris Todd Hittinger, an evolutionary geneticist at the University of Wisconsin?Madison. The yeast may have even stowed away in the digestive tracts of fruit flies. "Several generations of fruit flies hanging out on a sailing ship would get you pretty far," he says.

Of course, there may be an ecological niche for S. eubayanus closer to southern Germany that simply has not been located yet. "What we can say is that Europe is probably the most exhaustively sampled place in the world for wild and industrial yeasts," Hittinger says. "Our collaboration has searched on five separate continents, and we haven't turned it up?nor have others."

The process of brewing lager seems to predate a plausible transatlantic crossing of S. eubayanus, however, so it may be that early lagers were produced with standard ale yeast working below its optimal fermentation temperature. "The moment S. eubayanus comes on the scene and forms a hybrid, that would have immediately outcompeted S. cerevisiae in those environments," Hittinger says.

The researchers sequenced the S. eubayanus genome and found that it was distinct from any previously described species. The genetic analysis showed the newfound strain to be a 99.5 percent match with the missing piece of the hybrid lager yeast S. pastorianus?the part of the hybrid not accounted for by well-studied, warm-fermentation ale yeast.

That makes S. eubayanus a good candidate for the missing hybrid progenitor, says Ursula Bond, a microbiologist at Trinity College Dublin. "With such a recent hybridization event, one might expect to find 100 percent identity between the genomes," she says. "However, with the discovery of the dynamic nature of these genomes, which can undergo chromosome rearrangements and gene loss in response to environmental stresses, recent genetic changes may account for the differences."

Hittinger and his colleagues found the beech forest yeast as part of a larger effort to trace the biodiversity of Saccharomyces yeasts and wild yeasts in general. "We were certainly aware of the problem" of the missing half of the lager-yeast hybrid, he says. "You're always aware of the half dozen or dozen problems that your particular research campaign might impinge upon."

But now that the wild yeast has been located and identified, it may soon have some practical import, thanks to study co-author Diego Libkind of the National University of Comahue in Bariloche, Argentina. "Diego tells me that they're actually in talks with an Argentinean brewing company to make some beers using S. eubayanus and hybridizing it with S. cerevisiae to reenact the process that happened hundreds of years ago," Hittinger says. "Whether those beers taste any good or not, I think that's an open question. And we're all awaiting the results on that."
